Description

This course is designed with professional qualifications in mind. Our syllabus is closely linked with the requirements of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and Institute of Chartered Accountants England and Wales (ICAEW), giving you the opportunity to achieve maximum exemptions from professional accounting examinations. Without this degree, completing these papers would normally take a minimum two to three years, assuming you pass first time.

If you choose this course you will benefit from:

  • links with employers including IBM and the National Health Service (NHS) and the professional accounting bodies such as the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), who have delivered sessions with students on commercial awareness, key skills for getting a job and working in the accountancy profession;
  • placement opportunities with companies and organisations which have in the past included Tesco, the NHS, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), IBM, Toys R Us, as well as a large number of small to medium sized businesses;
  • opportunity for hands-on experience of using market leading accounting and business software packages, from SAGE for the small and medium enterprises, to SAP for the international companies;
  • studying with Coventry Business School who are currently a member of European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) and the Association of Business Schools (ABS);
  • access to academic staff with relevant professional backgrounds and industry experience, who bring this into their teaching;
  • an excellent National Student Survey (NSS) score, e.g. 100% in 2013.

Course Content

The first year provides the foundations for all further study. You will study Introductory Financial and Management Accounting, plus Economics, Mathematical Techniques and Statistics.

The second year builds on these foundations with mandatory Financial and Management Accounting, Corporate Law and Taxation, with options in Finance and Banking. Research skills are also developed in this year in preparation for a final year project in a topic of your own choosing.

The final year requires you to study International Corporate Reporting, Performance Management, Financial Management and Corporate Finance, while there are further options in Audit, Corporate Governance, International Finance and International Taxation.

Your course will be based on a series of weekly lectures, small group seminars and workshops. Some classes may be held in IT suites where students have individual PCs and work using appropriate software packages, such as SAGE and SAP.
