The Master of Nuclear Science is a two-year graduate program that gives you the opportunity to study the fundamentals and applications of nuclear science, including materials analysis, dating techniques, nuclear medicine, and nuclear energy.

The ANU Master of Nuclear Science gives you opportunities for laboratory-based training using advanced equipment. It also enables you to develop the scientific background you need for informed debate on nuclear issues, without advocating a particular position.

Career Options

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the skills and knowledge to:

  1. Explain fundamental concepts of nuclear science to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  2. Interpret, synthesize and critically evaluate nuclear information as it applies in diverse contexts.
  3. Use radiation detectors and broadly apply practical knowledge of nuclear measurement methods.
  4. Perform experimental work, collate data, interpret and analyse results, and write research reports.
  5. Discuss, interpret and critically analyse contemporary issues of nuclear technology based on a sound knowledge of the nuclear fuel cycle, the alternative types of nuclear reactor, the behaviour and effects of ionizing radiation, and the applications of nuclear accelerators.

The Master of Nuclear Science requires the completion of 96 units, which must consist of:

A minimum of 12 units from completion of PHYS8207 Special Project

A minimum of 48 units from completion of courses from the following list:
