The program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association. There are three tracks, all of which award a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry. Two of the three tracks also award an MSD or a concurrent MSD/MPH.

Mission Statement

The Department of Pediatric Dentistry shares the University’s overall mission to generate and disseminate knowledge and to serve the community. Through its exemplary educational, research and service programs the Department:

Educates pediatric dentists for a lifetime of continuous learning and leadership;

Generates new knowledge through basic and clinical research;

Promotes effective preventive measures to ensure a lifetime of oral health; and

Collaborates with other disciplines and organizations to develop policies to increase access to oral health care for all people.

Two-year MSD: Two positions

This track is a joint Residency/Masters program. The research component will result in the award of a Master of Sciences in Dentistry. This must be obtained before the certificate in Pediatric Dentistry is given. Students must be accepted to both the Pediatric Dentistry Program and the Graduate School at the University of Washington.

Two-year Pediatric Dentistry Rural Education Program (PREP): Two positions

This track is a joint Residency/Masters program. The research component will result in the award of a Master of Sciences in Dentistry. This must be obtained before the certificate in Pediatric Dentistry is given. Students must be accepted to both the Pediatric Dentistry Program and the Graduate School at the University of Washington. PREP residents are trained in the skills needed to work effectively in dental Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs).

Three-year Concurrent MSD/MPH Program: Two positions

This track has three options. Students must be accepted to both the Pediatric Dentistry Program and the Graduate School at the University of Washington. Application to the School of Public Health will be done AFTER acceptance to the program; it is not required before the first year.

MSD and certificate in Pediatric Dentistry with a certificate in Academic Leadership and a certificate in Maternal and Child Health (for more information, click here).

Applicant must hold a DDS or DMD degree from accredited college/university in the United States or equivalent degree from a foreign institution.

Must be eligible for state dental license.

Must have passed Part 1 of the National Board exam.

Must be proficient in the English language.

Applicants who do not have degrees from accredited institutions within the United States or Canada will be required to supply GRE scores to UW Graduate School; graduates of accredited US or Canadian institutions are not required to submit GRE scores.

Student’s record should be strong with an average of grade B or better.

Tuition for the academic year 2012-2013 is approximately $19,600 for in-state residents and$40,000 for out-of-state residents. Non-supported students must be able to demonstrate the ability to pay all university expenses.
