Department of Civil Engineering of Izmir University of Economics reflects the objective of producing knowledge and technology, then practicing and sharing them with the aim of carrying out the activities of education, research and community service at the level of universal standards and contributing to local and national improvement of our country. Department of Civil Engineering aims to educate the inquisitive engineers of the future with professional and ethical values, cultural knowledge, ability to develop contemporary solution algorithms for civil engineering problems and the principle of continuous improvement, and also aims to a department that produces knowledge for the benefit of humanity.

The aim of Department of Civil Engineering is to prepare students for future by equipping them with advanced knowledge required by civil engineering in compliance with today’s technological developments. For this purpose, the students will perform applied practices by utilizing laboratory resources and also with the help of theoretical practices by the knowledgeable and dynamic academic staff of our university closely following the technological developments.

The need for qualified civil engineers speaking a foreign language, competent on advanced technologies by the projects financed by foreign investors in accordance with international standards has been gradually increasing both abroad and in Turkey. In particular, the construction projects have to be modeled very well in order that multi-functional complex structures can be built in a very short time, economically, and in international quality norms; furthermore, construction planning, systematic control, and the quality management system have to be nicely envisioned. These systems require particularly the highly qualified knowledge of computers (CAM, CAD), the knowledge of technology governance and construction techniques as well as the knowledge of foreign language especially English. Merely a small part of current stock of civil engineers in our country is able to have these characteristics and they fail to meet the needs. Therefore, the need for civil engineers with the knowledge of modern information technologies, computer-aided design, knowledge of practice and governance as well as foreign languages has been gradually increasing every day in our country.

Izmir University of Economics aims to educate future civil engineers qualified for the need of our country via the available computer system infrastructure and informatics systems and by the help of academic members specializing in computer-aided design as well as academic members with experience in practice and laboratories.

The medium of education in the program of Civil Engineering is English; moreover, students will learn a second foreign language offered by our university during the education of students. These students to graduate with a full command of second foreign language will meet greatly the need in the construction sector equipped with theoretical and practical knowledge as well as vision of future.

Undergraduate programs of İzmir University of Economics consist of at least 52 courses with 240 ECTS credits in total.

There are at least 5 courses in each semester excluding common compulsory courses and Second Foreign Language courses.

In each program, there are common compulsory courses defined by Higher Education Council of Turkey (YÖK), Second Foreign Languages, and other common courses determined by the University Senate.

Beginning from the junior (third) year, elective courses are anticipated in each semester.

25% of the elective courses are taken from other faculties.

There are at least 10 elective courses in each undergraduate program.

The students are registered to this course at the beginning of the first semester of the freshman year and the course is intensively conducted.

Applied Workshop I-II

This course is offered in the 7th and 8th semester of senior year and it is conducted as seminars or conferences given by vocational professionals under the coordination of a faculty member. At the end of the semester, the assignments of the students related to these seminars and conferences are evaluated.

Internship

Principles of Atatürk and History of Revolution I-II

These are the compulsory courses which are required to be offered in all of the associate and undergraduate programs in Turkey according to the Higher Education Legislation.

Introduction to Computer and Information Technologies

This course is anticipated in all the associate and undergraduate programs in Turkey in order to make the students gain the qualifications related to basic information technologies.

Academic Skills in English I-II

This course is offered in the first and second semester and conducted according to the program curriculum of each faculty.

When beginning the freshman year, the students choose one of the second foreign language courses and register to this course during the 8 semesters.

 

In the framework of the regulations set by Higher Education Council of Turkey (YÖK), student admission for this undergraduate program is made through a university entrance examination called ÖSYS. Following the submission of students’ academic program preferences, Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) places the students to the relevant program according to the score they get from ÖSYS.

International students are accepted to this undergraduate program according to the score of one of the international exams they take such as SAT,ACT etc. or according to their high school diploma score.

Exchange student admission is made according to the requirements determined by bilateral agreements signed by IUE and the partner university.

Visiting students can enroll for the courses offered in this program upon the confirmation of the related academic unit. Additionally, they need to prove their English language level since the medium of instruction at IUE is English.

The students studying in this undergraduate program are required to have a Cumulative Grade Points Average (Cum.GPA) of not less than 2.00/4.00 and have completed all the courses with at least a letter grade of DD/S in the program in order to graduate. The minimum number of ECTS credits required for graduation is 240. It is also mandatory for the students to complete their compulsory internship in a specified duration and quality.
