Programme presentation

The Bachelor’s Programme in Biomedicine at Karolinska Institutet is an international study programme given in English.

Graduates in Biomedicine have a broad knowledge of the biology and pathology of the human body and an understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying major global diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, allergies, infections and neurological diseases.

The programme is carried out in an active research environment and in close contact with the front-line of biomedical research. As biomedicine is an international subject students are encouraged to study part of the programme at one of our international partner universities.

About programme

The curriculum contains both basic scientific schooling and medically oriented courses. The students are trained in laboratory practices and scientific methods, and are introduced to clinically oriented research. The education is carried out at theoretical and clinical departments at Karolinska Institutet.

The final semester consists of a degree project. For this, the students choose their subject area within the field of biomedicine, and the project is carried out either at an academic institution or a pharmaceutical company, in Sweden or abroad.

The programme provides a solid base for further studies at a Master’s level, and is specifically connected to the international Master’s programmes in biomedicine, bioentrepreneurship and toxicology at Karolinska Institutet. It does also prepare for further Master’s studies nationally or internationally. The programme provides a foundation for a career in research, clinical testing, marketing, management or in media/information relating to the field of biomedicine, in an academic setting or in the life sciences industry.
