The discipline of archaeology involves illuminating the past culture of mankind through material evidence other than the written word. The department focuses its educational efforts on teaching effective methodologies for the study of the above disciplines and on imparting basic knowledge of the fields to students.

The departmental student association takes into account student opinion on a variety of issues and attempts to reflect the voice of the students in decision-making processes. It also serves as a forum for the exchange of views between students in the department.

Many undergraduates continue their studies in graduate school and end up teaching and engaging in research at universities, or find employment as cultural specialists in charge of research at the National Museum of Korea, the National Museum of Modern Art, and many other public and private museums and art galleries.
