The School of Architecture and Built Environment has developed an innovative approach to architectural education. From the beginning of the program, students work on projects that reflect real design problems met by architects in practice and use them to develop the knowledge and competence required of a graduate entering the profession. Working usually in small groups with tutors, as in a design office, students learn to creatively integrate the contributions of various disciplines to the effective practice of architecture. The basic building needs of work, home and public life from the themes of design problems covered in the program. The Architecture design studio provides students with personal-work-stations and computer network connections to allow participation in the synergy of a shared learning experience.

Why study with us?

The Master of Architecture degree is a two year full-time (or equivalent part-time) program. The Master of Architecture can only be undertaken following the successful completion of the Bachelor of Design (Architecture) program or equivalent, if registration as an Architect and the practice of Architecture is desired.

The Master of Architecture is fully accredited. Please refer to the Professional Accreditation section for further detail. The program has regularly received high commendation from professional accreditation bodies.

As well as a career in private architectural practice, opportunities that may require further study include careers in town planning, construction, project management, property development, overseas aid, infrastructure planning, research, journalism, criticism, restoration and conservation.

The University of Newcastle’s Master of Architecture has been carefully structured to ensure you receive the most relevant education, preparing you to be a highly competent architect.

Comprised entirely of compulsory coursework, you will explore design research in detail which will foster your creative problem solving skills.

You will develop your understanding of key concepts associated with the construction of high rise buildings, learn the key concepts and processes associated with academic research activities within the built environment and discover and learn to manage the many issues associated with architecture and urbanisation.

In your final year, you will focus on the practical execution of your individually selected architectural design project , with courses in construction ecology, architectural management and practice and design.

The Master of Architecture offers a highly relevant advanced education, to best prepare you for your career as a highly competent architect.

Applicants must have successfully completed a Bachelor of Design (Architecture) program, or approved equivalent in order to apply for entry.Practical ExperienceStudents are encouraged to take a break of at least one year between the Bachelor of Design (Architecture) and the Master of Architecture in order to travel and/or gain experience in architect practices in Australia and overseas. Accreditation

The Master of Architecture is recognised for registration by the State Boards of Architects, the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia, the Royal Australian Institute of Architects and the Royal Institute of British Architects. This program along with a minimum of two years professional experience and subject to passing a professional practice exam conducted by the State Board of Architects, leads to registration as an architect.

These qualifications are internationally recognised and reciprocal arrangements exit with many countries.
