The digital world is evolving rapidly. In an age where the consumer is in control, it becomes increasingly important to think of new ways to articulate narrative and convey ideas. During the masters programme (one year) in Media, Aesthetics and Narration, you will learn how to create narratives and understand how the stories integrate with computer games and new digital media. After your studies, you will have the ability to work within a dynamic and expanding industry, or you can go on to further study at masters and doctoral levels.
The need for qualified and skilled personnel in the computer game industry and other industries that use digital media is increasing as the market rapidly develops. After your studies you will be able to work with narrative in various forms in new media, particularly with digital media. With this academic background, you will have the skills to meet a rapidly growing market and contribute to the innovation of new technologies and new business opportunities.
The first semester begins with an overview of current theories, perspectives and concepts within the research field. The following course will introduce you to transmediality and its practical implementation, which characterizes narrative production today: narrative that takes place through multiple media, creating a whole that cannot be confined to one medial form. The course also includes a creative element in which you are encouraged to work with other media forms than the ones that your BA studies focused on.
The final course of the first semester is conducted in collaboration with an external client. This means using new media theory to understand the clients wishes and formulate a research problem, on the basis of which you will carry out a needs analysis and a prototype that will meet those wishes. For example, there may be a company that wants to develop a product, an idea or make use of different media technologies. You will have the opportunity to formulate a research question using the knowledge acquired during the preceding courses, at the same time as being able to develop your practical skills in a production-oriented environment.
The second semester gives you the deeper theoretical and methodological knowledge for the final degree project and thesis. New trends in the computer game industry and other industries show that storytelling and creative forces in digital media are becoming increasingly important. Through the courses included in the program, you will learn how to identify and find solutions to current scientific problems within the field of digital media.
