This new taught postgraduate programme offers  multi-disciplinary training in aircraft technologies for reducing environmental impact and life-cycle costs. Air travel is vital for the continued prosperity of the EU economy and is predicted to grow significantly over the next 20 years. The challenge facing aviation is to meet the predicted growth in demand in a way that ensures that the environment is protected. This new MSc programme provides courses on the fundamental disciplines that are of prime importance for developing new enabling technologies vital to the design of more environmentally friendly future aircraft.

The programme can be completed in 1 year on a full-time basis. The programme begins in October and ends in September. The programme is comprised of core and optional modules: the core modules are complusory and consist of a set of introductory non-examinable modules and modules related to the "Green Aviation" initiative. The optional modules deal with advanced Aeronautical engineering topics.

Students will also undertake an Individual Research Project.

Programme Aims and Objectives

  • To provide a high level, one-year taught course in advanced aspects of aeronautical engineering with special emphasis on the technological innovation and the challenges involved in the design of next generation aircraft.
  • To attract academically talented and motivated students from home and overseas.
  • To graduate students with fundamental understanding of the course material and the ability to apply it to practical problems.
  • To enable students to acquire a mature appreciation of the context in which engineering projects are developed.
  • To ensure that not only do we provide enhanced engineering training but that we also encourage and provide an opportunity for conversion to an advanced aeronautical engineering for excellent and motivated graduates from Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering and, in some especial cases, other relevant Engineering disciplines.

Applicants should have been awarded, or expect to be awarded, a first class (1st) or upper second class (2:1) or equivalent degree in Engineering (Aeronautical or Mechanical).

Aero MSc Bursary Scheme

This scheme is open to Home students that are able to secure a place on an MSc programme accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society. Home students of both are MSc's are eligible for his bursary, and are encouraged to apply for this scheme without delay. Applicants need not hold an offer from Imperial when they apply for the bursary. The main criterion for the award of a bursary will be the candidate’s motivation and commitment to a career in UK aerospace.

Funding for tuition fees is available for up to 500 students to undertake MSc programmes at UK universities which are accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society, or supported by the leading aerospace companies, starting in academic years 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2015/16.

The scheme will pay MSc tuition fees (up to £9,500) on behalf of successful applicants. Bursaries will be awarded to candidates who can demonstrate their commitment to working in the UK aerospace sector and who have been offered a place on an approved MSc in Aerospace Engineering. Applications will be accepted before an MSc place is offered but will be conditional on receiving, and taking up, the MSc offer from a UK University.

This Scheme is for people who:
- Would not have previously considered a career in aerospace
engineering, or
- Would not have been able to access MSc study in aerospace
engineering because of the cost of postgraduate study,
or
- Are already employed by one of the Bursary Scheme partner
companies or by an SME in the UK aerospace sector and are
nominated by their employer.

Your applications cannot be accepted if you are:
- Currently employed by a firm in the UK aerospace sector which is
not a Bursary Scheme Partner or an SME; or are
- Currently employed as an engineer in another sector where there
are engineering skills shortages.

All applicants who are not Nominated as described above, must be:
- Ordinarily resident in the UK on the first day of the MSc
programme (with the exception of frontier students* studying in
the UK).
- And one of the following:
o EU nationals (including UK nationals) including direct family
members as long as they have been ordinarily resident in
the EEA for the last three years; or
o Nationals of Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland
who are working in the UK, including direct family members
and who have been ordinarily resident in the EEA for the
last three years; or
o UK residents with ‘settled immigration status’ (no
restrictions on how long you can stay) who have been
ordinarily resident in the UK for the last three years; or
o Refugees and people who have been granted humanitarian
protection including direct family members ordinarily
residing in the UK on the first day of the first academic year
of the course; or
o Children of Swiss nationals who have resided in the UK
where the children have been resident in the EU/EEA or
Switzerland for the last three years; or
o Children of Turkish nationals who have resided in the UK
where the children have been resident in the EU/EEA,
Switzerland or Turkey for the last three years.

Postgraduate Certificates and Diplomas are not available in the Department of Aeronautics.
