    The programme prepares students well for a career in public administration or in the private sector, as well as for the Ph.D. programme.

    The Master Programme in Economics prepares you for advanced work outside the academy in both the private and public sectors. If have an interest in research, the programme also prepares you for graduate studies. The structure of the programme is organised to offer a progression that suits most students. The Department is, scientifically and geographically, closely connected to the Institute for Labour Market Policy Evaluation (IFAU) and cooperates with IFAU in certain courses within the programme.

    The department cooperates with the Economics department of Siena University in Italy. A few students each year are given the possibility to, during the second year, follow the master programme in Siena. Successful completion of studies leads to a double degree from Uppsala and Siena.

    Career

    The master programme in economics makes you well prepared for highly qualified analytical and investigational work at public authorities and in the public administration, at research institutes, banks and other financial firms, Swedish and international organizations, large firms etc. It also provides the prerequisites for applying to the Ph.D. programme in economics.

    Degree

    The programme leads to a Master of Science in Business and Economics (120 credits). The student may instead choose a Master of Social Science (120 credits), with Economics as the main field of study.

    First semester

    You start the first semester with standard courses in micro and macro theory and analytical methods. Each course consists of 7.5 credits. During the first part of the semester, the courses to be taken in parallel are Microeconomic Theory and Analytical Methods. Microeconomic Theory is an advanced micro course which gives the students a more profound knowledge of consumption and production theory and general equilibrium analysis, among other things. Analytical Methods consists of two parts, mathematical analysis and game theory. The mathematical analysis aims at providing the students with the necessary mathematical background for more advanced studies in microeconomics and econometrics. The second part will introduce the students to the basic game theoretical concepts.

    The courses taken during the second part of the semester are Topics in Microeconomics and Macroeconomic Theory. Topics in Microeconomics is an applied course where microeconomic theory is applied to different kinds of economic issues. The course Macroeconomic Theory gives an introduction to modern advanced macroeconomics and deals with subjects like economic growth, business cycles, consumption, investment, unemployment and macroeconomic policy.

    Second semester

    The second semester is devoted to courses in statistics, econometric theory and applied econometrics. Each course amounts to 7.5 credits.

    Third semester

    The aim of the courses of the third semester is to broaden the knowledge attained during the first two semesters. You can choose from a number of more applied courses at the department. The department offers the following elective courses: Financial Theory, Applied Macroeconomics, Public Economics, Political Economics and Labour Economics.

    Fourth semester

    The fourth semester is devoted to the writing of an essay amounting to 30 credits.


    Program requirements

    A Bachelor’s degree equivalent to a Swedish degree of at least 180 credits (three years of full-time studies, of which at least 60 credits should be in economics and 15 credits should be in statistics or a closely related subject).Proof of skills in English to a level corresponding to English B in the Swedish secondary school. This is normally attested by means of an internationally recognised test with the following minimum scores:IELTS: an overall mark of 6.5 and no section below 5.5TOEFL: Paper-based: Score of 4.5 (scale 1-6) in written test and a total score of 575. Internet-based: Score of 20 (scale 0-30) in written test and a total score of 90Cambridge: CAE, CPESelectionSelection is based on the degree of success in previous studies, particularly in Economics and Statistics.     Uppsala University provides several different scholarships for students. The scholarships cover exclusively the tuition fees for courses within the programme, i e 30 credits per semester.
