The Master's programme in Medical Anthropology and Sociology, employs social science theory and methods to critically analyse health issues facing a globalising world.

The Master's programme in Medical Anthropology and Sociology (MAS) educates students to understand health, illness and the body from a social science perspective. The programme looks both at pressing health problems as well as key issues in social science theory. It enables students with a Bachelor's degree in a social science to deepen their knowledge of their discipline, while at the same time acquiring a specialisation in a health-related topic. Students with a medical and psychological sciences background, on the other hand, acquire further training in social science and learn to critically and reflexively integrate this training with their earlier academic and professional experience. The UvA has been a pioneer in this exciting and growing field. Our intensive, one-year programme combines coursework and a thesis project based on fieldwork. Some students choose to do research in the Netherlands and other European countries; others go to Asia, Africa or the Americas. Students examine a broad range of issues: from the social determinants of disease to sexual subcultures to the politics of pharmaceuticals.

The programme consists of three core courses and one elective course in the first semester. The core courses focus on the theoretical framework, research subjects for Medical and Social Anthropologists and the research design. Students also take one elective course on a theme or in an area that relates to their research interests. The programme is completed with a fieldwork of 8- 10 weeks and a thesis in the second semester.

    Thesis

The Master's thesis (23 ECTS) is based on qualitative research carried out by the student under supervision of a faculty member. Students design their own research projects. Some fieldwork positions will be made available to students through the institute. In some cases, students can connect their individual projects to the research activities of staff members, or to current PhD projects within the department.

    Degree requirements

Upon successful completion of three required core courses (27 ECTS), one elective course (10 ECTS) and the required fieldwork and thesis project (23 ECTS), students will receive an officially accredited masters degree in Medical Anthropology and Sociology and the title Master of Science.
