The two-year MSc Animal Sciences study programme is a continuation of a BSc or equivalent degree in the field of livestock, companion animals, wild animals and zoo animals. The aim is to deliver skilled professional animal scientists who are well equipped to tackle problems related to sustainable livestock development and management of companion animals, wild animals and zoo animals. The animal-human interaction plays an important role in this programme. Themes like nutrition, animal health, animal welfare, levels of management, genetic composition and socio-economic factors are all widely discussed.

Today's livestock and companion animal specialists need a fundamental scientific training combined with a critical attitude towards all aspects constraining sustainable development of animal husbandry. The master Animal Sciences, which is unique in the Netherlands, offers the multidisciplinary training necessary for a future career in this field.

Contribution to animal welfare and food safety

Animal health is an important issue in all human-animal interactions. You investigate how animal diseases can be prevented, for example by means of nutrition, effective housing and/or by designing good breeding strategies. You can therefore provide a real contribution to animal welfare and food safety. These are topics that are focus of interest in the Netherlands, Europe, and worldwide.

    Multidisciplinary and individual approach

In order to find a solution to such complex problems, you must have a lot to offer. And therefore we make sure you are well prepared. In your programme, you study a number of biological subareas, such as physiology, genetics, ethology and ecology. Of course, you also learn a great deal about business processes in subjects such as business economics, business administration and marketing. As an animal scientist you can work with farm animals such as cows, pigs and poultry, but also with companion animals (dogs, cats and horses), animals in the wild or zoo-animals.

In the first year there are a couple of general courses you have to follow and a couple of courses retated to the specialisation you have chosen.

The second year you have to do an internship and a major thesis or a major and minor thesis depending on your educational background.

    Specialisations

Within the MSc Animal Sciences you can choose between 6 specialisations. Each of the specialisations trains you to become an expert in that field. Find out more about the specialisations of Animal Sciences. The two major parts of your specialisation are a thesis and an internship.

    Internship (24 ECTS)

The research internship is usually conducted at a university abroad or a research institution, but can also be conducted at a company in The Netherlands. The choice of an internship location is based on the interests of the student and the (worldwide) contacts of the staff of the research group. Students, who did not graduate for their BSc at Wageningen University, have to do an extra thesis instead of an internship. But this thesis can also be conducted outside the university.

    Thesis (36 ECTS)

Your own interest is very important in choosing a research topic for your thesis. There are a lot of collaborations between research groups within Wageningen University, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Utrecht, foreign universities and with a large number of organizations active in the area of Animal Sciences. This way you can choose a thesis subject that fits your interests best.

    English

All Master of Science programmes at Wageningen University are taught in English. In this way you are well prepared for a career within a global setting and for maintaining contacts with foreign colleagues.
