Focus

Tourism has developed into a dynamic and fast growing sector, creating an interdisciplinary field
of study and research. The tourism industry offers economic benefits, growth and opportunities for
people and businesses in destination areas. At the same time, matching demand (tourists) and supply
(destinations) remains a challenge. The position of the destination areas is becoming more and more
important. This master in Tourism Destination Management is designed to contribute to this,
focusing on practice, perspectives and policies of tourism management at destinations.

Phases

The curriculum is subdivided into three phases. The first phase in Breda, with a clear emphasis on theory, is considered to be the preparation for the second phase which will take place on three different types of tourism destinations. This second phase has a focus on the tourism practice under different circumstances and you will work in international student research teams. In the final phase, the dissertation is written in which practice and theory should be brought together and in which is strived towards new insights, theories or generalisations.

Phase 1 - Theory in Breda
Phase 2 - Practice at three different types of tourism destinations around the world
Phase 3 - Dissertation (Final Thesis)

Phase 1: Theory in Breda

During the first phase, you will gain theoretical knowledge and develop your professional skills. This enables you to effectively analyse the current situation and available potential for development strategies at various tourism destinations. Destination theories, models, developments and practical cases will be studied. Courses are given by lecturers, along with an interesting team of visiting lecturers from international organisations and universities. Students interact on a daily basis with this specialised team of academics and tourism professionals.

  • Destination specific tourism subjects focusing on theoretical knowledge and tourism practice
    • Destination Stakeholder Analysis (3 ECTS)
    • Destination Cultural Analysis (3 ECTS)
    • Destination Development Strategies (3 ECTS)
    • Tourism Destination Finance (3 ECTS)
    • Tourism Destination Marketing (3 ECTS)

General context related subjects with a focus on knowledge and actual issues

    • International Tourism Context (3 ECTS)
    • International Project Management (3 ECTS)
    • International Tourism Research (3 ECTS)

    Phase 2: Fieldwork

In the second phase you will carry out assignments at three different locations in the Asia Pacific. These assignments are written by the staff in cooperation with stakeholders involved in developments of and at tourist destinations in this region. The Asia Pacific has been selected because of the:

    • great familiarity of the staff with the area
    • many contacts with businesses, governmental institutions and academies
    • familiarity with developments and dynamics
    • many variations in culture
    • ever changing combinations of Western and Eastern influences

Three different locations in the Asia Pacific region

This fieldwork research project is an important, if not crucial part of the programme. You carry out field research and consultancy assignments at three different locations in the Asia Pacific region. These destinations vary each year. Students visit:

    • an area with a typical tourist character (e.g. Bali, Phuket)
    • an urban area with tourism development (e.g. Singapore, Brisbane)
    • a rural area with existing but limited tourism developments (e.g. Palawan / Phillipines, Da Nang / Vietnam)

    Practical team assignments

Through these assignments theoretical insights come together with professional skills in management and research. You will also interact with stakeholders at a professional and managerial level as you work in close cooperation with professional and well-known tourism organisations in this area.

The assignments are based on complex subjects relevant to each destination. Based on an initial briefing document, you conduct research, use theory and international case studies, after which you present your advice to stakeholders. These presentations offer a great opportunity for professional interaction and discussion between students, staff and stakeholder representatives.

    Phase 3: Dissertation

By writing a dissertation during the last phase of the programme, you apply your research skills and demonstrate a true understanding of tourism destination management from a professional and academic point of view. You are required to demonstrate critical analysis and evaluation. The dissertation uses concepts, insights and practical abilities to develop a better understanding of the subject under investigation. A dissertation is an individual assignment, carefully supervised by one of the NHTV lecturers.

    Final thesis

Producing a dissertation is an independent process. While producing you demonstrate your ability to do research and understand a topic of your choice in the field of your preceding education in and outside NHTV. This challenge, when undertaken thoroughly, can be a difficult but a very rewarding one as well.

    Audience

Challenging and inspiring education with different cultures

Your study programme will cover some focus areas which are very unique to NHTV. These focus areas are cross-cultural understanding, social responsibility, imagineering and entrepreneurship. In a cross-cultural context you learn to look at other cultures. The aim is to learn to understand different views looking at a problem from several perspectives. You will set off to uncover hidden information, you won’t think twice about asking questions, and you will learn to innovate based on a social responsibility, or in other words, based on certain values, such as sustainability and business ethics. Out-of-the-box thinking and imagineering are the connecting thread that runs through all of NHTV’s study programmes. You learn how to let go of obvious ideas and develop your own values, allowing you to create a product or service that appeals to the target market’s imagination. Entrepreneurship and graduation projects with own companies are encouraged and facilitated.

    Grants and scholarships

It is a well-known fact that most students live on a very limited budget. This limited budget can be an obstacle when going abroad to study or on an internship. However, some students qualify for extra financial support. Check your options below.

    • Loan tuition fees/'collegegeldkrediet'

If you are going to study at an institution of higher education in the Netherlands (or abroad), you are required to pay tuition fees to that university (or university of applied sciences) at which you will be studying. The university can inform you about the amount of tuition fee you have to pay. In some cases you can apply for a loan to pay for the tuition fees. Please visit the DUO website for more information.

    • Taks deductions
The Dutch tax authorities (www.belastingdienst.nl) accept the course fees and costs of study books under the regulation of "buitengewone aftrek studiekosten". In such cases, the fees can be deducted from the taxes, which gives a financial advantage of 30-50% (or in some cases even more). This is only applicable to the parents of students who pay their taxes in the Netherlands. We advice students, who would like to know more about this, to contact the tax authorities directly.

International students could check with their local tax authorities if they offer similar possibilities.

    • Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP)
The Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP) are fellowship programmes designed to promote capacity building within organisations in 50 developing countries by providing training and education to their mid-career staff members.

The NFP is initiated and fully funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the budget for development cooperation.

Please visit the NFP website for all information concerning this scholarship program including requirements, procedure and link to apply.

Students meeting the NFP criteria can apply for a NFP scholarship. Interested students need to apply for admission at NHTV and for the scholarship in Atlas separately.

    • StuNed Scholarships

StuNed, Studeren in Nederland, is a scholarship programme focusing on mid-career professionals, as part of the bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and the Netherlands. The scholarship programme aims to contribute to the development of Indonesia through strengthening the human resources of Indonesian organisations.

A student needs to be admitted to one of the programmes offered by NHTV in the academic year. The application deadline is in March, (check the website for the precise deadline) therefore make sure you apply in time to allow us ample time to assess your application. Some programmes require students to take part in an intake interview (by phone).

More information on the StuNed Scholarships can be found on www.nesoindonesia.or.id

    • Colfutoro Scholarship-Loan Program

Colfutoro Scholarship-Loan Program offers financial support to Colombia’s most talented and capable people.

The Loan-Scholarship Program is COLFUTURO’s main program. It provides financial support for Colombian professionals pursuing postgraduate degrees overseas in any field of study. A percentage of the loan becomes a scholarship when the beneficiary meets a set of requirements.

More information about the requirements and how to apply can be found on www.colfuturo.org
