    From looking out to looking in: Insight is the simplest way to describe the MSc in Technical Geology degree. Which sediments contain groundwater? What is the spatial distribution of the sediments, and which layer of soil protects groundwater against pollution and to what extent? Why do strata have strengths, and is it possible to predict the variation in strength from one type of deposit to another and from one part of the country to another? These are just some of the questions you will become capable of answering as a technical geology student.

    Options and scope

    The two-year MSc in Technical Geology programme builds on a relevant graduate engineer or BSc degree. The degree programme is offered by Aarhus University and organised in collaboration with the Aarhus School of Engineering. Depending on the students background, the programme leads to the title of graduate engineer or MSc (Engineering). Depending on your qualifications, you commence your studies with a supplementary course in geology or engineering geology. The supplementary courses account for approximately half of the first year of your studies. The remainder consists of an individual programme composed in collaboration between the student and the specialist lecturers for the degree programme.

    From lectures to fieldwork

    This multidisciplinary degree programme is taught at both the Department of Geoscience at Aarhus University and the Aarhus School of Engineering. Both institutions have a strong study environment with a focus on the individual student and the interaction between academic and social challenges, for example via fieldwork and expeditions. As a technical geology student, you do not get to sit at your desk for long periods of time. The teaching is regularly supplemented by field trips to different destinations in Denmark or to countries such as Norway and Greenland. As a student, this gives you a chance to work with geology in practice. The teaching is normally in small groups and consists of a combination of theory and work on practical exercises.

    A global workplace

    As a graduate from the programme, you will acquire comprehensive knowledge that can land you a job in the environmental, energy and planning sectors, which means that jobs are available in both consulting engineering companies and public administration. You also have the option of working in the construction and facilities branch in connection with solving geotechnical tasks. A degree in technical geology opens up career possibilities both in Denmark and abroad.

    The Masters degree in technical geology counts as 120 ECTS credits and mainly consists of subjects within the technical geology field of study. You specialise by participating in course activities and projects and by writing a thesis. During your very first week, you structure your own individual study programme with the help of a teacher from the Department of Earth Sciences by choosing courses from a course catalogue. Your programme is based on your academic qualifications and interests and the subjects you studied for your Bachelors degree. The plan must be approved by the Board of Studies before you can enrol for examinations.

    A year divided into four terms

    The teaching is divided into terms with four terms per year. Each term consists of a block of seven weeks followed by an examination period of 2-4 weeks.

    PhD programme

    If you have the necessary skills and interest, you have the option of applying for admission to the PhD programme. In the PhD programme, you start working on a research project and are gradually trained through courses and personal guidance to become a researcher.


    University requirements

    You apply online through the Aarhus University self service system. To be able to apply online, you first have to create a self service account. Once you have created your account and logged on the self service system, please select the option "Application form for free movers (non-exchange)".

    Please be aware that you need to start your application within 24 hours of creating the self service account.

    To best prepare your application, it is important to understand the structure and the different locations of Aarhus University. Aarhus University has three different campuses (located in Aarhus, Herning and Emdrup) and is divided into four faculties, which are subdivided into 26 departments.

    Remember when choosing courses that you may only take courses at one location and within one faculty. You may not choose courses at more than two different departments. 

    It is important that you have a relevant academic background for the courses that you apply for. You must have taken courses at your home university within the specific subject field you have applied to in order to be accepted to any of the departments. 

    EU students can sign up for 5 ECTS to 30 ECTS during a semester. To obtain a study and work permit, students from outside the EU/EEA have to study 30 ECTS in total (20 ECTS at one department). If you choose courses at more than one department, it is important that you choose at least 20 ECTS at one department. Students applying for courses at Aarhus BSS, should only apply for courses at one department.

    At the application form, you can apply for housing as well, if needed.

    Documents to be attached with your online application:

    You will be required to attach the following documents to your application:

    • Official transcript of records from your home university (must be in pdf format and must be in English!)
    • Copy/Scan of passport
    • Transcripts from bachelor studies (for master students only)

    Students applying to Aarhus BSS only: Students must upload a letter confirming that they will be able to transfer credits from Aarhus University to a degree at the home institution. If you cannot provide this documentation, you will be assessed according to the admission requirements of the relevant degree programme(s). Students can complete and upload this template or a similar document from the home university.  

    Processing times and notification

    You will be informed approximately six weeks prior to semester start whether you meet the prerequisites to be enrolled in the requested courses. However, as enrolment in courses for free mover students is dependent on available space in the relevant courses, you will not receive final confirmation about course enrolment until approximately two weeks prior to semester start. If there is space left in the courses, you will receive a notification about this and an invoice. Only after the invoice has been paid in full, will you receive a Letter of Enrolment and be enrolled in the requested courses. Please be aware that due to this procedure, Aarhus University cannot guarantee that free mover students will be admitted and enrolled in courses by semester start. 


    Program requirements

    Admission to the Master's degree programme in engineering at Aarhus University requires successful completion of a BSc degree within the same subject. For this reason foreign students must be able to provide full documentary evidence that they have completed a university degree equivalent in level and contents to a Danish BSc degree.
