Are you interested in energy optimisation, renewable energy in building design, building operations, and indoor climate? The Master’s programme in Building Energy Design focuses on optimisation of operation and environmental impact in buildings through energy efficient building design. Indoor climate, heat transfer, and ventilation are keywords in the programme.

Throughout the programme, you will obtain specialised knowledge about energy conditions in buildings, and you will learn to combine and integrate solutions for construction, installation, and energy technology with the purpose of creating a cost-effective whole with a minumum of environmental damage.

Rated for excellence

Aalborg University is rated for excellence in the QS-ranking system. Aalborg University has received five stars certifying the world-class position of the university based on cutting-edge facilities and internationally renowned research and teaching faculty.
Within Engineering and Technology, Aalborg University ranks as number 79 in the world.
The QS Stars system is a detailed comparative tool focusing on the performance of the institution based on a broad set of criteria, such as employability, facilities, innovation, research, teaching, and internationalisation.

Problem based learning (PBL)

Aalborg University is famous for its problem based learning where you work in a team on a large written assignment often collaborating with an industrial partner. This study method is also called “The Aalborg Model for problem based learning”. The method is highly recognised internationally, and UNESCO has placed its only professorial chair in PBL at Aalborg University.
The problem based project work at Aalborg University gives you a unique opportunity to acquire new knowledge and competences at a high academic level in an independent manner.

Job and career

As a graduate from the Building Energy Design programme, you can have a career as for instance

  • project manager
  • specialist
  • energy consultant
  • head of operations

You can work in both national as well as international consultative engineering companies, contracting companies, energy supply companies, or in public authorities or research institutes.

Graduating from Building Energy Design, you will have influence on the environmental development in our future society by working with topics such as energy use and optimisation, alternative energy, computer simulation of energy flux, control of building systems, indoor climate, heating plants, and mechanical and natural ventilation.

During the study programme, you will gain an integrated understanding of the relation between energy efficient design of buildings and optimal operation concerning indoor climate, energy consumption, and overall economy.

During the 1st semester, you will work with themes like:

  • Building energy consumption and indoor environmental quality
  • Introduction to problem-based learning
  • Heat and moisture transport in building indoor environmental analysis and measurement
  • Building energy modelling

During the 2nd semester, you will learn about:

  • Building ventilation, heating and cooling
  • Building heating and cooling systems
  • Control and analysis of building energy systems

The 3rd semester focuses on:

  • Building commissioning, operation and environmental impact
  • Environmental assessment methods and tools
  • Life Cycle Cost Analysis and cost optimisation

During the 4th semester, you will write your Master’s thesis.
