The relevance to society of health care far exceeds the increasing economic prominence of this sector in the economy. Such a relevance calls for staff and executives in health care organizations to be aware of fundamental economic trade-offs, legal and regulatory restraints, ethical concerns affecting the organizational logic in this sector.

HEALTH ECONOMICS & MANAGEMENT (HEM) is a 2-year Master Level curriculum of theLaurea Magistralis in Economia e Politica Economica that uniquely combines economics, management and law to form such a far-sighted and socially responsible top executive of private and public organizations operating in the health care sector.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

HEM prepares students to be employed in staff and executive positions in organizations and institutions involved in health care provision. A key to the fulfillment of steady job in this sector is awareness of the societal relevance of health care and the implied constraints imposed by regulation and the law. Therefore the programme aims to develop competences and expertise in the field of health economics and policy, health care management, health law and regulation.

The prospective candidate will develop:

  • knowledge of key options in the policy, planning and financing of health care services;
  • an ability to use disciplines required in formulating, implementing and evaluating strategic choices in health care;
  • an understanding of the diversity of international health policies.
  • gain practical experience in managerial issues;
  • develop basic quantitative skills and the ability to apply them in a problem-solving context;
  • develop communication and co-operation skills.

The prospective candidate will develop:

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The health care is a prominent sector in every economy. Most countries are confronted with growing challenges within this sector, due to increasing demand pressure, changing needs and technological innovation. To address these challenges, many countries have implemented several reforms, such as new health care financing systems, the restructuring of health organisations, the use of strategic planning and attempts to devise more customized incentive systems. In this context the demand for personnel with the competencies acquired through this programme is evident.

Career destinations after graduation are wide and varied.

HEALTH ECONOMICS & MANAGEMENT prepares students to seek employment in many sectors including the pharmaceutical and medical devices industries, consultancy firms, insurers and insurance funds, large health care providers, government, international organizations, NGOs and non-profit organizations.

HEALTH ECONOMICS & MANAGEMENT also gives students a solid foundation for entering a PhD programme or for further research.

Our graduate can fruitfully work out functions like:

  • - managing relations with public administrations, regulatory authorities and international organisations;
  • - fulfilling administrative duties that requires economic reasoning, management skills and legal competencies;
  • - addressing executive duties in insurance and pharmaceutical companies, large hospitals and third payer institutions;
  • - providing consultancy and economic advising in health related policies;
  • - supporting strategic analysis and decision-making in health care markets;
  • - evaluating health promotion programs and public interventions in the health care markets;
  • - developing research projects and activities in the health economic and management fields

Learning activities are organized according to the following plan for 120 ECTS credits in total.

The first semester is aimed at acquiring fundamentals of economics, management, law, policy sciences and research methods relevant to the health care sector. Second and third semesters are devoted to the development of advanced & specialized skills on current issues in health care sector. The fourth semester is mainly dedicated to the preparation of the dissertation.

Further specialization can be gained by an internship in prominent organizations. Moreover our prospective students can apply for Double Degree tracks allowing them to spend up to three semesters in a partner University:

  • Management Center Innsbruck (MCI)
  • Institute of Health Policy and Management - Erasmus University Rotterdam
  • Institute of Health Management and Health Economics - University of Oslo

HEM is a full time programme and attendance is compulsory. Exceptions will be carefully evaluated upon motivated request.

Program requirements

For admission to a Second Cycle Degree Programme, you must have one of the following qualifications:first Cycle Degree;second Cycle Degree;University Diploma; qualification issued by the Fine Arts Academies, National Dance Academy, National Dramatic Arts Academy, Higher Institutes for Artistic Industries, Conservatories and equivalent musical institutes, according to the system in force on the date of entry into force of Italian Law no. 508 of 21/12/99 (provided that the candidates also possess a high school diploma);original foreign university or post-secondary qualification (you must check the suitability of the qualification).The qualification must comply with the curricular requirements laid down for the Programme you wish to enrol in.To enrol in a Second Cycle Degree Programme with open access, you must also sit the entrance exam. The University of Bologna offers Unibo Action 2 study grants to deserving international students, who wish to register for Second Cycle Degree Programmes in A.Y. 2014/2015.
