The Master´s Degree in International Economics at the Autonomous University of Madrid (MIE-UAM) offers a modern and quality training aimed to prepare students to work in the field of international economic analysis. The main objective is to train professionals who may develop their careers in national and international economic organizations, departments of economic analysis, consulting firms and economic research centres. We place special emphasis on the development of quantitative skills and on covering with rigor the main áreas of international economics. Teaching in English. In addition, the Master gives access to the UAM´s Doctoral Programme in Economics and Business.

The MIE-UAM consists of 60 ECTS credits and is taught during three terms. Teaching takes place in the morning during the first two terms and in the afternoons during the third term. In this third term students also write a master thesis (6 ECTS) and choose between doing internships in leading private and public institutions (see details below) or enrolling in the course Introduction to Research Techniques (6 ECTS each option). The Program is managed by the Department of Economic Analysis: Economic Theory and Economic History at the UAM, where clases are held. 

Fall Term (5 compulsory courses)

  • Econometrics (4 ECTS; compulsory)
  • Advanced Macroeconomics II (4 ECTS; compulsory)
  • International Macroeconomics and Finance (5 ECTS; compulsory)
  • Industrial Organization: An International Approach (4 ECTS; compulsory)
  • Topics in International Trade and Political Economy (3 ECTS; optional)
  • International Financial Markets (3 ECTS; optional) (Note: This subject is taught in Spanish)

Spring Term (1 compulsory course + 2 out of 3 optional courses)

  • Microeconometrics (4 ECTS; compulsory)
  • Topics in Economics in International Perspective (3 ECTS; optional)
  • Topics in Quantitative Economics (3 ECTS; optional)
  • Topics in Applied Economics (3 ECTS; optional)
  • Internship (6 ECTS; compulsory for the professional track)
  • Introduction to Research Techniques (6 ECTS; compulsory for the research track)
  • Master thesis (6 ECTS; compulsory)

Requirements

  • Official university qualification such as an undergraduate degree, bachelor’s degree or other equivalent, in Economics or Business Administration
  • An official certificate of level of English (IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge English, OAL-UAM, Linguistic Services Office from your home university etc.) with at least a B2 (or equivalent) level. This doesn't apply for students coming from english-speaking countries/universities/schools.
  • Bachelor's diploma
  • Transcript of records from the Bachelor's degree
  • Average Grade statement (see "Average Grade statement")
  • CV (Curriculum Vitae)
  • Certificate of level of English (or at least some proof that you'll get it before the enrolment deadline in September)
  • ID/Passport
  • Elective courses pre-selection form ("Hoja de preinscripción de asignaturas")
  • Specific documents required for each master (letter(s) of recommendation/reference etc.).
  • FOREIGN STUDENTS ONLY: when their average grade point is not in a 1-to-10 scale, applicants must also submit the ANECA's certificate of average grade equivalence for studies undertaken in foreign countries (see here). Please note that this certificate can take up to 2 months to be delivered, so applicants should request it with enough time in advance.
