The Doctorate in Economics, Finance and Management has been awarded the Recognition of Excellence ("Mención hacia la Excelencia") of the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science for the academic years 2011-2012 to 2013-2014.

The doctoral programme is the last step of postgraduate studies in economics, finance and management.

The purpose of the doctoral programme is to prepare students with exceptional talent for careers in research and teaching at the world's leading academic institutions, research centres, consulting and financial firms, and international organizations. It is therefore oriented toward developing students' research skills and independence of thought. The programme is a partner in theEuropean Doctoral Program (EDP) in Quantitative Economics, a joint initiative by the Department of Economics at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, the London School of Economics, the European University Institute (Florence), the Université Catholique de Louvain, the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciencies Sociales (Paris) and the Universität Bonn.

Objectives

The main objective of this doctorate is to conduct research leading to the defence  of  the doctoral thesis.  

Academic contents

In addition to research for the doctoral thesis, the PhD includes:

  • Formal defence of the Thesis Proposal  
  • Attendance at research seminars at the Department of Economics and Business
  • Some course work. To complement the research training, the Director of the doctoral programme may also recommend specific courses in some master's degree programmes that are coordinated by the department and its affiliated centres.    
  • Presentations at conferences and periods spent at other universities are highly recommended and partially financed by the programme.

Requirements

  • In order to be admitted to Biomedicine PhD Programme offered by UPF, candidates must provide accreditation that they have obtained an accredited undergraduate degree (Bachelor degree or recognised equivalent degree from an accredited Higher Education Institution).  
  • Moreover, they have to proof that they have obtained or are in position to obtain an accredited graduate/master's degree(equivalent to a Spanish Master Universitario/Oficial, Master's of Research.... ) which enables them to access a Phd programme in their home country. 
  • In order to access a doctoral programme at UPF, you need to have completed 300 ECTS credits, 60 of those have to correspond to an official graduate, research orientated master's programme.
  • A photocopy of the official final undergraduate transcript. 
    (If the academic transcript is not written in Catalan, Spanish, English, French, Portuguese or Italian, you will also have to include the respective sworn translation in English, Catalan or Spanish).
  • If the Master's degree has been completed before the application is filed, the following documents should be sent:
    • A photocopy of the graduate/master's degree/diploma or Certification/proof of degree completion.
    • A photocopy of the official final graduate/master's transcript .
  • However, if the graduate/master's studies have not been completed before filing the application, the following documents will be needed:
    • A photocopy of the provisional graduate/master's transcript. 
      If the diploma or the academic transcript are not written in Catalan, Spanish, English, French, Portuguese or Italian, you will also have to include the respective sworn translations in English, Catalan or Spanish). 
  • A Research Proposal: this should be a concise statement of issues of interests: importance, history, and candidate's approach- less than 4 typed pages
  • Two academic reference letters: Letters must be sent directly by recommenders.
  • Proof of knowledge of the English language: This requirement can be waived if the master degree  was obtained in English.
