The MA in 20th- and 21st-Century Literature will enable you to explore the complex cultural histories of literatures in English - national, minority, dissident, and diasporic - from the twentieth century to the present, and offers advanced training in the combined uses of close textual study, history, and theory. Individual modules trace the paradoxes of modernity within the intersecting discourses of aesthetics, education, ethnicity, nationalism, legality, science, sexuality, and urbanization.

The MA in 20th- and 21st-century Literature is a specialist programme that allows you to focus in literature, culture and thought in the long twentieth century. The programme is linked to the Centre for Contemporary Writing at the University of Southampton (Centre for Contemporary Writing). The MA can be used as professional training, or as preparation for PhD study at Southampton and elsewhere. Students in our programme benefit from small-group teaching with world-leading experts in modern and contemporary literature; creative writing; postcolonial studies; literature and science; poetics; and literature and law.

Our MA 20th and 21st Literature students come to us from all over the world, as well as the United Kingdom.

Programme structure (full-time route)

The full-time route comprises 51 weeks, starting in October. The programme consists of 6 units (2 core units and 4 option units, 20 credits each) plus a dissertation (60 credits).

In your first semester, you will take two compulsory core units, Research Skills A and Text, Theory, Culture, and one option. In your second semester, you take Research Skills B and three further optional units, either from the English MA programmes or from other related MA courses in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. These units are assessed by coursework involving essays, oral presentations and practical tests (for example take-away examinations). You complete the programme with a dissertation of 15,000 to 20,000 words on a topic of your choice, written over the summer.
Programme structure (part-time route)

Students following the part-time route complete the same programme of study as full-timers and attend the same taught modules. However, your programme extends over 24 months, and you complete the 2 compulsory modules and 4 optional modules over four semesters rather than two. You will prepare the 15,000-20,000 word dissertation during the summer of your second year.
