Maritime history covers all aspects of humankind's relationship with the sea and links to broader aspects of economic, political, cultural and social history. Its many facets include: shipping and shipbuilding, both naval and mercantile; trade and commerce; fishing; sea power; labour; ports and coastal communities; exploration; and maritime policy. The programme focuses on maritime history since the late 18th century, and places an emphasis on developing student skills in historical research.

The programme is particularly aimed at those with an existing interest in the more recent maritime past who are keen to deepen and broaden their knowledge and to investigate problems through individual research. It is also relevant to those with a first degree in history or a related discipline who want to develop maritime history expertise.

Career options
Graduates may pursue opportunities in maritime history and/or undertake a doctoral study.

The aims of the programme are:

* To understand the main developments of national and international maritime history, naval and commercial, from the mid eighteenth century to the present
* To provide students with an appreciation of how theoretical and interdisciplinary perspectives have informed historical understanding of maritime history
* To develop key generic skills in research, critical thinking analysis, problem-solving, written and oral expression of information and argument.

* Sources, Methods and Archives for Maritime Historians (20 credits)
* Twentieth Century International Maritime History (20 credits)
* Case Studies: Maritime History (20 credits)
* Dissertation in Maritime History (60 credits)
* One option chosen from: Economics of International Shipping; 20th Century International Naval History; Defence and Security; Case Studies Maritime Policy; Environmental History and the Sea: The British Isles, 1800-2011 (20 credits)

Applicants should have:A good honours degreeOR an equivalent qualification in an appropriate subjectOR relevant personal or professional experience. UK-based applicants are interviewed prior to acceptance. Applicants may be asked to provide examples of written work. Students educated in a language other than English should have an IELTS score of 6.5 or above or an equivalent rating in another language testing system. English Language Requirements IELTS band: 6.5 IMPORTANT NOTE: Since April 2014 the ETS tests (including TOEFL and TOEIC) are no longer accepted for Tier 4 visa applications to the United Kingdom. The university might still accept these tests to admit you to the university, but if you require a Tier 4 visa to enter the UK and begin your degree programme, these tests will not be sufficient to obtain your Visa.
