The course is centred on the needs of the modern professional lawyer working or intending to work in trade, transport and maritime related industries. Your legal study is set in a specific context to provide you with a detailed knowledge, depth of understanding and practical insight into the industry.
Tuition through seminar participation will help develop the analytical, critical, communication and research skills upon which to build your career. A compulsory one-week foundation course precedes the first semester to provide a foundation in commercial law, research and assessment technique.

We aim to find students appropriate linked vocational activity during their degree and are fortunate to have a full-time placement and employability officer dedicated to Law students.

This course is led by Susan Hawker, expert and specialist in Maritime Law. Susan is a Principal Lecturer in International Trade and Shipping law at London Metropolitan University, and Associate Professor at the London Law Centre of the University of Notre Dame (South Bend, Indiana, USA).

After qualifying as a barrister, Susan worked in P & I, before going into academia. She is currently also the examiner for and academic consultant to the Grain and Feed Trade Association (GAFTA).
In addition to these roles Susan also lectures for the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers as well as being a visiting lecturer at Cass Business School, City University School of Engineering and BCA Athens, teaching on postgraduate and professional shipping courses.
