The BA-program Society, Media and Politics (SMP) integrates the social sciences necessary to tackle the key challenges of our globalized world in a digitized context. Sociology, media studies and political sciences are learned from a problem-solving and research-oriented, student-centered perspective.

Students are empowered to address pressing social problems in their environment by applying their knowledge and skills in research and direct practice. They learn to campaign for their initiatives with the skillful use of digital media at Jacobs University SMP Media Center.  Learning to use podcasts, websites, animations or other forms, gives students a broad variety of chances to actualize their creative potential and learn the skills of the trade that are so vital for modern labour markets.

Our students are young people who want to make a difference. SMP provides an excellent basis both for graduate studies and the European and international job market for the leaders of tomorrow. Our graduates are known to build successful careers in start-ups and NGOs as well as in large companies or have moved on to the most renowned academic institutions of the world because. With their high skills in creative problem solving, the ability to judge from a broader perspective and to think out of the box they are best prepared for global positions of leadership.

SMP (formerly Integrated Social Sciences) is rated as one of the best study programs in the field of social and political sciences in Germany by the renowned CHE (Center for Higher Education Development) University Ranking.

Educational organisation

Jacobs University Bremen programmes are individually structured. Every student is assigned to a specific professor within the programme or an adjacent programme for academic advice. The goal of academic advising is to provide detailed information to students concerning the programme of study and to help students manage their time at university to their best advantage.

Internships

The internship programme is a core element of Jacobs University's employability approach. It includes a mandatory semester-long internship off-campus (minimum 16 weeks full-time), which provides insight into the labour market as well as practical work experience related to the respective area of study. As an alternative to the internship, a study abroad semester is also possible.

Forms of assessment

Students are required to maintain a successful record of achievement and progress towards their degree. They must keep up a good rating within the university. The Bachelor's study programme comprises of 180 ECTS credit points, which are awarded upon successful completion of mandatory and mandatory elective modules.
A variety of forms of assessment are used, such as written exams, presentations, oral exams, written assignments, project/lab reports, and Bachelor's thesis.

Course objectives

The BA degree in Integrated Social Sciences qualifies graduates for international leadership roles in business, mass media and intermediary organisations. Career opportunities include international business consultants, legal assistants, project managers, HR consultants, and marketing specialists.

Our students have accepted positions with companies such as Proctor & Gamble, Deutsche Bank, Masterfoods Europe, UNDP, UNICEF, Ericsson, DaimlerChrysler, Siemens, KPMG, and Effective Media Management. Others have continued their studies in graduate programmes in MA and direct PhD graduate programmes at internationally renowned institutions such as Harvard Law School, Harvard Business School, Oxford, and Cambridge.

Costs of living

8,000 EUR per year for room and full board (single room, shared bathroom and three meals a day) during the fall and spring semesters.

We offer an orientation week, which includes of the all the information that is important to new students (residence permit, insurance, student life, academic matters etc.).

Services and support for international students

The orientation week is the same for all students. Faculty advisers, senior student advisers, local volunteers and host families in Bremen have worked closely with us to make our students feel welcome in their new environment.

Accommodation

Jacobs University Bremen is a campus university. Undergraduate students live in apartments with two single rooms in residential colleges. The campus provides a gym, a fitness centre, a football pitch, sport courts, a cinema and a Student Activity Center. Residential colleges are led by Resident Mentors, College Coordinators and their student teams.
