Study mode:On campus Study type:Full-time Languages: English
Deadline: Apr 15, 2024
StudyQA ranking:3784 Duration:4 semestrs
The MBA Programme IMRE focuses on the management of natural resources and the environment, but is concurrently a fully-fledged MBA education.
The programme is structured into four areas:
  • Economics & Law
  • Business Administration
  • Environmental & Resource Management
  • Interdisciplinary Studies
These areas consist of clusters ("modules") such as Economic Theory, Operations Management & Information Systems, Business Management, Principles of Environmental Management, Applied Environmental Management, Sustainability Management, etc. Cultural studies, mandatory German courses and electives in which students can choose lectures from the complete range of courses offered by the university emphasise the interdisciplinary approach.
The programme is completed with the elaboration of the Master's thesis which may be supervised by any professor at the university. Finally, students have to conduct a colloquium to present the main findings of the thesis.

Educational organisation

Students are expected to work according to the general study plan. Additionally, they may choose further lectures on a voluntary basis to extend their knowledge and skills.
The IMRE Office, professors and research assistants will support the students and offer individual professional guidance.
The programme is structured in such a way that important courses in the area of business administration are offered in the first two semesters. Courses related to the management of resources and environment are mainly taught in the third and fourth semesters. The Master's thesis is expected to be completed in the fourth semester. Free electives can be take at any time during the four semesters. Six credit points can be earned through successful completion of an industrial internship which replaces two free electives. The programme is organised in such a way as to offer the best possible flexibility to students in accordance with their learning skills.
Since this is an MBA programme, students are expected to participate actively in the educational process and they are expected to prepare numerous presentations, complete many assignments and write several academic papers.

Study abroad unit(s)

Through an exchange programme with the sister programmes at the partner universities, students have the opportunity to study for one or two semesters at these partner universities and to graduate with a double degree in agreement with the respective examination regulations.
Within the framework of the EU-sponsored ERASMUS Programme, one semester may also be spent at partner universities in Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Norway or the USA, depending on the student's individual situation.

Internships

The IMRE Office supports students in finding an internship in a company/organisation.

Forms of assessment

Students must take written, oral and alternative examinations (assignments, presentations etc.) which are generally offered in the framework of seminars, practical training or projects.
Many lecturers request active participation in the classroom. Discussions among the small group of students (typically 20 to 25) are more than welcome and enrich the learning atmosphere in the classroom.
Typically, clusters ("modules") account for six and three credit points, depending on the workload.

Course objectives

The educational target of the MBA programme IMRE is to provide students coming from a scientific or engineering background with knowledge, expertise, and skills in managerial sciences. The core focus of the education is on the management of natural resources and the environment.

Arrival support

The International Centre provides support to new international students by assigning a mentor to each new student. A buddy is a German or international student who speaks German and English, sometimes French, Spanish or Russian. The mentor takes the newcomer through the first steps in Freiberg and at the university, i.e. picking the student up at the train station upon arrival, helping with enrolment, and with all other required administrative formalities (e.g. health care, opening a bank account, administrative formalities at city hall). Students who wish to participate need to register well in advance of their arrival (http://www.iuz.tu-freiberg.de).

Services and support for international students

Intensive and individual professional advice is provided by the supervisors and coordinators of the programme. The International Centre offers support to all international students within the mentor programme, German language courses as well as information and consultation about studying and living in Freiberg.
Student initiatives offer valuable cultural services for all students and PhD students at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg and support the intercultural exchange at the university. Their activities include the international weekend at the beginning of the winter semester, the regular international corner with topical events, and trips to interesting places in Germany.
Psychological counselling is also provided to all students in need.

Accommodation

A limited number of places are available in the dormitories (http://studentenwerk-freiberg.de). The rent for a room ranges from 170 to 320 EUR per month. The International Centre offers support in finding accommodation on the private market (http://tu-freiberg.de/en/international/accommodation).
