This programme, joining the forces of a first-class engineering department and one of the highest-rated computer science departments in Germany, focuses on technologies for mobile communication. It covers the broad spectrum, from circuit and antenna design, signal processing for optimising the digital transmission and for speech recognition to the design of multimodal user interfaces. The programme offers a solid foundation in engineering mathematics and practical training.

Educational organisation

Students are free to choose courses according to their preferences. There is no given timetable for the completion of courses.
Part-time studies are possible.

Forms of assessment

Almost every course ends with an exam or a term paper/project. Credits are given only for successfully completed courses. The overall grade is the mean of all grades (90 ECTS) obtained during the course of study and the grade of the Master's thesis (30 credit points).

Course objectives

A profound knowledge in the chosen fields of computer and communications technology and insight into contemporary research issues; preparation for a PhD position; ability to work in an international surrounding (research or industry)

Language requirements

English proficiency is essential. Standardised test results (TOEFL, IELTS or CPE) are required. Please note: English certification will be waived for students who received their Bachelor's degree from a university located in a country where English is the first official language.

Academic requirements

Bachelor's degree with a grade of at least 75%, i.e., within the top 10% of the class, completed online application form including the following:
  • Cover letter stating why you would like to join the MSc programme
  • your CV
  • certified copies of all degrees and other relevant academic qualifications
  • full academic transcript of all courses taken, detailing course content and duration
  • two letters of recommendation
  • English language certificate

Enrolment fees

Approx. 200 EUR per semester, including a semester ticket covering public transport in the Saarbrücken area

Costs of living

About 800 EUR per month to cover personal expenses (incl. accommodation)

Job opportunities

Jobs as tutors and assistants are available in the department each semester. Openings will be posted on bulletin boards and on our websites.

Arrival support

The International Office provides assistance (in finding accommodation and registering with the university and resident authorities) and organises social and intercultural tutoring.

Services and support for international students

Saarland University offers a special support and guidance service for our international students and visiting scholars. As well as welcoming new foreign students to the university, we organise excursions and cultural events where students and scholars from abroad can meet German students and colleagues. We also provide support in dealing with official and administrative matters. To encourage interaction between German and international students, the international office also runs a successful peer mentoring programme called "you and me".
