This Masters programme provides training in the general field of economic development and gives you the opportunity to specialise through the optional courses. It is designed for non-economics graduates in the social sciences who are seeking to move into the development field.

It will be suitable if you wish to pursue a career in teaching or research; if you wish to expand your knowledge as a government official; or if you are working in this field for international agencies or in non-governmental organisations concerned with development.

Career prospects

As a graduate you will progress to successful careers in international organisations, government ministries, academia and research institutions, non-governmental organisations, banks and other financial institutions.

On this programme, students will take two core courses and four optional courses and complete a substantial independent piece of work, normally in the form of a dissertation.

Optional courses are also offered in Economic & Social History, Politcs and Sociology.

If you have little or no economics you are strongly recommended to take the non-credit introductory course to economics offered before semester one begins.

Entry requirements for entry in 2014You should have at least a 2:1 Honours degree or non-UK equivalent (eg, a GPA of 3.0 or above) in a social sciences subject.
