The research-based MSc course "Print and Media Technology", taught in English, is a two-year, full-time Master's degree programme with focus on new printing and media technologies. Besides conventional printing, the course emphasises innovative developments such as printed electronics, which has become one of the most promising areas in the printing industry in recent years. In contrast to conventional printing, which uses inks to produce coloured images, printed electronics makes use of novel materials and material combinations to print electronic devices, such as circuits, batteries, solar cells, displays, loudspeakers, etc.

Being a hybrid field of study, the course draws upon a wide range of disciplines. With input from both academia and industry, the programme's interdisciplinary curriculum is uniquely designed to be relevant in many rapidly growing and diversifying markets. Through team-based, industry as well as research-oriented projects, students develop the professional skills required to become practitioners, managers or scientists in the printing and media industry, or to pursue PhD studies.

With the possibility to study abroad for one semester and thereby receive two full Master's degrees, students are able to maintain a distinct competitive edge, opening doors to excellent career opportunities. The alternative to the double degree option is to study the whole Master's degree programme at Technische Universität Chemnitz in Germany. Graduates receive the degree "Master of Science in Print and Media Technology".

Educational organisation

The two-year Master's programme "Print and Media Technology" is a full-time study programme that consists of lectures, exercises, practical courses and seminars. It is divided into four semesters.

During the first semester students take lectures and seminars in Media Physics and Electronic Media and participate in a challenging team-based research project seminar in which they work on a research-based or industry-based task.

In the second and third semester students acquire knowledge in Media Management and Entrepreneurship, Print Production, Media Technology, Printing Presses, Smart Packaging and Digital Fabrication. In addition, they can elect courses in the interdisciplinary Applied Specialisation Module I and II. According to their choice in the fields Micro and Nano Systems, Electronic Devices as well as Industrial Production, students are able to establish an individual qualification profile.

During the last semester, students work on their Master's thesis. Thesis work may be performed at the university, partner universities, associated members, industry or research institutions related to the course specialisation.

Study abroad unit(s)

Students who opt for the double degree programme spend their second semester at Manipal University in India. In addition, the Erasmus programme offers the opportunity to study abroad for one or two semesters at a partner institution of Technische Universität Chemnitz. Furthermore, the Institute for Print and Media Technology has an extensive international network of industry and research partnerships. Hence, internships at home and abroad can be organised for highly qualified students.

Forms of assessment

Written and oral examinations in accordance with the guidelines of Technische Universität Chemnitz, reports on exercises, practical courses and projects, and a Master's thesis with an oral examination (defence)

Course objectives

The Master's programme "Print and Media Technology" stands out due to its multidisciplinary and international orientation. Besides specific aspects of print media technology, it includes advanced business studies and economics, electrical and mechanical engineering, information technology as well as natural sciences.

Owing to the strong emphasis on interdisciplinary education, graduates of this Master's programme possess qualified competencies for responsible positions in the print and media sector, in both academic and industrial settings, but also for a career in areas where cross-border knowledge is required and innovative and interdisciplinary approaches in an intercultural context are essential.

Graduates of the programme can work in the following areas: project management, research, planning and development, sales and services, business organisation, corporate communication, marketing, etc.

The MSc can also be a useful stepping stone for doctoral/PhD studies.
