The programme contains seven core modules. They include: Organisation Theory, Corporate Functions, Key Competencies, Human Resources Management, Strategic Information Management, Economic Policy and Strategic Management. Each semester takes 15 weeks to complete and is concluded by a two-week examination period.

Semester one introduces participants to the most important business principles, operations and processes as well as to essential management and research approaches.
Semester two focuses on strategy formation and implementation, the essential aspects of managerial finance and control and corporate governance. These subjects are supplemented by competence-based contents aimed at developing the learners' interpersonal skills, such as projects (a module which may include international weeks as well as assignments with international virtual student groups).
The final stage has been earmarked for the Master's thesis which is either based on in-company project work or on independent student research.

The Master's course may constitute a basis for further doctoral studies which will be supervised by the Centre for Business Administration and Management at Heilbronn University and by external institutions.

Educational organisation

Teaching and learning in the Master's programme combine traditional formats such as on-campus lectures and seminars with interactive phases of teaching and studying as well as the essential elements of e-learning. Moreover, there are international project weeks, virtual study groups, discussion forums and web-based training.
The Master's course seeks to inform management practice about current research developments and to provide it with professional expertise. Moreover, the faculty often invites business practitioners to contribute their topical ideas, experience and resources to the university.

Study abroad unit(s)

The MA Business Management is a modular programme embedded in the faculty's international network which provides attractive dual degree opportunities at a number of international partner universities (optional).

Students from international partner universities can join the Master of Business Management programme after having completed one semester at their home university. Provision has been made for international students who may compensate for lectures held in German by transferring equivalent credits from their home institutions.

Forms of assessment

This Master's programme includes a variety of assessment methods which are provided individually or for teams, including time-constraint assignments (TCAs), continuous assessment by means of coursework (CW), case study analyses, essays and written reports, as well as individual or group presentations (SP). Students receive feedback for each assignment which is both formative (during the module) and summative (at the end of the module). Furthermore, students will be able to use the lectures to gain additional feedback from their peers.

Course objectives

The programme qualifies graduates for all functions, tasks and activities related to strategic planning, implementation and supervision of organisational processes which are in constant need of adaptation and optimisation.

In particular, it aims at:
  • offering future business leaders a sound grounding in management theory and in-depth knowledge of the most essential business functions
  • providing an understanding of the multi-functional and cross-departmental operations and processes within business organisations
  • developing participants' analytical and creative skills
  • equipping them with the scientific methods and methodological tools required in a complex organisational environment
  • enhancing their interpersonal competences, proficiency in English and IT literacy
  • enabling them to act appropriately and responsibly in a multi-dimensional organisational environment

The legally protected degree "Master of Business Management" entitles its incumbents to fill general management positions over a large range of organisational functions and gives them access to top-level careers. Moreover, it qualifies them for admission to doctoral studies.

Language requirements

Applicants must prove that they have a good knowledge of English and German. Exception: If your Bachelor's studies have been completely in English in a country with English as the official language. Applicants have several options to prove that they have a good knowledge of English and German:

  • IELTS, not older than one year with an overall score of 6.5 and min. 6.0 in all categories
  • Online-based TOEFL min. 85 points, not older than one year and min. 20 points in all categories
Native speakers of English are exempt from this requirement.

German (only if joining semester one):
  • CEFR level C1 (attested by the "Ausländerstudienkolleg" - ASK - in Constance)
Native speakers of German are exempt from this requirement.

Academic requirements

Successful applicants
  • hold an honours or Bachelor's degree in business studies or a in business-related discipline which carries a minimum of 210 ECTS credits
  • have been awarded an excellent or very good final average grade (ECTS grade B or equivalent)
Students who have completed a BA programme comprising 180 ECTS credits may acquire an additional 30 ECTS credits during their studies at Heilbronn University.
The compatible nature of the first degree and successful attendance at the interview are decisive admission criteria.

Enrolment fees

All students have to pay an enrolment fee of approx. 130 EUR per semester. This includes an administration fee of 60 EUR, a social contribution for the student services of 54 EUR (a contribution to cover the costs for the student facilities like the "Mensa", cafeteria, student halls of residence, and a contribution towards the "Semesterticket"/transport pass) and a contribution to the "constituted student union" of 14 EUR.

The Faculty Assistant in charge of the Master's programme advises students on all organisational issues while the academic staff discuss course contents and coursework with students on a regular basis.
