Combining the breadth of a traditional course of study with the specialisation in one out of three highly attractive majors, the English Master's degree programme in Computer Science is perfectly suited to obtain an excellent education tailored towards the needs of the working market. These majors are

• Autonomous Systems in Computer Science
• Service Technology and Engineering
• Visual Computing

Moreover, the English Master's degree programme constitutes a good opportunity to qualify for one of the PhD programmes mentioned below in the case of an outstanding degree. Classes offered by the Master's Programme in Computer Science are entirely in English.

University of Stuttgart is an international well-established research university, especially in computer science and engineering. The research budget funded by national and international research foundations and by industry is the largest of all computer science faculties in Germany. Moreover, Stuttgart is located right in the heart of the leading technology region in Europe. Companies including Daimler AG, Porsche, Bosch, Celesio, Hewlett-Packard and IBM have their world or European headquarters here. In addition, research and development laboratories of international companies like Philips, IBM, Lucent Alcatel, Agilent are located in Stuttgart. University of Stuttgart has strong relations to these industrial partners. The recently established IBM Technology Partnership Center at the university is only one prominent example for that.

Apart from these strong industrial ties, University of Stuttgart offers several PhD programmes in computer science for Master's students. These programmes cover various scientific fields such as robotics, visual computing, computer engineering, service technology and engineering, database systems, parallel as well as distributed systems just to name a few of them. They are organised by several computer science departments with four to 20 PhD students each and over 130 PhD students in total. Together with its connections to industry, this structure leads to an excellent research and working environment with great job opportunities in industry and academia for talented and motivated international and national Master's and PhD students.

Educational organisation

In the first semester, the module theoretical and methodological foundation of computer science, which is specific for each major, is compulsory. Core and extended modules can be chosen form the respective catalogues. The core modules of the major serve to get a deeper understanding and knowledge in the field of the major. The extended modules are courses to support the core modules with boarder knowledge. In the breadth modules are complemented by a broad education in computer science. All modules of the computer science faculty, except the modules of the respective major, can be selected as breadth modules. The graded seminar is part of the second semester and imparts you the knowledge and techniques to present results in written or oral form. The third semester offers great flexibility. For example, it is possible to stay abroad. Alternatively, different modules can be selected instead, for example:

• research project (project 9 ECTS + Seminar 3 ECTS) with 12 ECTS
• minor with 2 x 6 ECTS
• breadth module with 6 ECTS

The fourth semester is reserved for the Master's thesis.

The third semester offers the possibility to study abroad. This, however, has to be planned for each interested student separately.

Language requirements

Students have to provide proof of their English language skills:

• advanced knowledge of English at level C1, or TOEFL PBT score 550, or TOEFL CBT score 213, or TOEFL iBT score 80, or IELTS at least Band 6, or Cambridge ESOL CAE/CPE
• For German students, the proof of five years of English classes at secondary school are sufficient, with a grade of at least 3.5 in the last two years.
• Applicants whose Bachelor programme was held in English only need a university certificate.

Academic requirements

The admissions requirements include:

• Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) with a programme duration of at least six semesters in computer science, software engineering, or in a closely related subject
• examination results from the Bachelor's programme which support the qualification of the applicant for the Master's programme in computer science
• adequate knowledge of the English language for specialised study

Approx. 170 EUR per semester

Costs of living

To cover living expenses, you will need about 750 EUR per month. This is for rent (approx. 300-350 EUR), health insurance for non-EU residents (approx. 80 EUR), the semester ticket for public transport (190 EUR/six months), food (approx. 200 EUR), other incidental expenses and working materials (approx. 100 EUR).

Job opportunities

Owing to its location in the heart of one of Europe's largest high-tech regions, there are many opportunities to find employment. Nevertheless, please do not come to Germany expecting to be able to finance your entire studies by working. The study load is very high and it is not always easy to find a part-time job. Non-EU citizens are allowed by law to work for a maximum of 120 full days (240 half days) per year. Students who are employed by the university in one of the institutes or departments ("Studentische Hilfskräfte") are exempt from this regulation, but other restrictions apply. You are not allowed to work during the first year while attending a German language class in preparation for the test of German as a foreign language (TestDaF).

Arrival support

A pick-up service is part of our welcome package. If you wish, you will be contacted before your departure, and if you arrive between 8am and 8pm, you will be met at Stuttgart airport or railway station and taken to your accommodation. Your host partner will also help you to deal with all formalities. This service is free of charge.

Accommodation

Both campuses in Stuttgart-Vaihingen and in Stuttgart city centre have on-site halls of residence. Dorm rooms (ranging from 240-350 EUR per month) are furnished, some are equipped with a sink, and all have access to kitchen and sanitary facilities, telephone, and Internet. From the campus in Stuttgart-Vaihingen, the city of Stuttgart can be reached by suburban railway within 10 minutes.
