Assessing and controlling different types of risks are key responsibilities in companies as well as in the financial sector. The quality of risk management processes is a crucial factor in the success or failure of a business. Increasingly complex financial products, various regulations and the enormous importance of information technology have created a great challenge both to financial and non-financial companies. Mastering these challenges requires thorough understanding of complex financial strategies, financial modelling ability, computational proficiency, and managerial vision.

In response to this demand, our Master's program in Financial Engineering offers a unique combination of finance theory, engineering methods, management tools, mathematical and computational techniques. With its long tradition of interdisciplinary program, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) provides an ideal interdisciplinary environment. Building on the long-established reputation for excellence in business engineering, the two-part program combines an in depth knowledge and understanding of fundamental concepts in business, finance, and management, with the latest developments in financial engineering.

Educational organization

The Master's program is offered at the HECTOR School, Technology Business School of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). It is especially designed for engineering professionals who have already worked in their jobs for approx. three years. It is designed as a part-time program over a duration of about 20 months and concludes with a Master of Science awarded by the KIT.
The academic calendar for all Master's programs of the HECTOR School starting in October each year consists of 10 intensive modules, each with a duration of 10 days. At the end, the Master's program concludes with a Master's thesis.

Forms of assessment

Written and oral exams at the end of each module and Master's thesis and colloquium after completion of the modules.

Course objectives

Graduates of the Master's program Financial Engineering (FE) are capable to take over executive functions in financial management. They are qualified to consider challenges of finance from an engineer's point of view and to develop and optimise innovative solutions on the basis of fundamental economic laws by means of mathematics and statistics. Their distinct understanding of complex financial products, their analytical skills of projects and financial products together with their leading visions enable them to deal with the challenges of a globalised finance sector.
Participants can apply acknowledged financing theories, engineering methods, and management tools as well as mathematical and computer-aided techniques and simultaneously identify the limitations of economic and financial-mathematical models. Therefore, they are well prepared for their careers, e.g., in credit institutes, investment companies, insurance companies, consulting firms, and finance departments of big national and international industrial companies.
