Human Rights is increasingly becoming a subject of both national and international importance, with many countries now endeavouring to ensure that their legal systems embody a full respect for citizens human rights and the growth of international protocols, such as that leading to the establishment of the International Criminal Court, those securing the rights of minority populations and indigenous groups, and the creation of international conventions designed to tackle Human Trafficking.

SYLLABUS

Students must complete four courses, a course in research skills , LS5087 Critical Legal Thinking and Scholarship) and a dissertation (LS5810 LLM Dissertation). At least three courses must be taken from the Human Rights course options, and must include LS 5590 International Human Rights Law . The fourth course can be taken from a different LLM Programme.

ASSESSMENT

Assessment is based on a combination of written examination at the end of the relevant semester and one or more course essays. In addition, students must complete a course in research methods and a dissertation on a topic within the specialism. The dissertation is planned and written between March and August each year. Guidance on the writing of a dissertation is given.

TEACHING

Teaching is organised on a modular basis. There are two 12-week semesters, the first beginning at the end of September, the second at the end of January. Students can join either in September or January. Examinations are held at the end of each semester, in January and May. The dissertation is submitted at the beginning of September each year, regardless of start date. Courses are offered subject to the availability of staff, sufficient enrolment and sabbatical arrangements.

Normally a 2(i) Honours degree in Law (or another discipline) or equivalent.The English Language Requirement for all College of Arts and Social Sciences Masters programmes is an IELTS of 6.5 with 6.0 in the writing and reading. English Language Requirements IELTS band: 6.5 IMPORTANT NOTE: Since April 2014 the ETS tests (including TOEFL and TOEIC) are no longer accepted for Tier 4 visa applications to the United Kingdom. The university might still accept these tests to admit you to the university, but if you require a Tier 4 visa to enter the UK and begin your degree programme, these tests will not be sufficient to obtain your Visa. There are scholarships and grants for international students who wish to study in Britain. There is a lot of competition for a limited number of awards, but it is worthwhile applying for the ones relevant to you. You should begin your research early as some scholarships require you to apply at least a year before your degree starts.

Accreditation

Law has been taught at the University since its foundation. Today, the School ranks among the UKs top Law Schools by The Times Good University Guide and achieves high satisfaction ratings in the National Student Survey, and has high graduate employment rates.
With 40 academic members of staff, the School has a broad range of research expertise. It is home to a Centre for Energy Law, Centre for Private International Law, a Civil Law Centre and an active Rural Law Research Group. Other key areas of expertise include Criminal Justice, Arbitration and IntellectualProperty Law. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), published in December 2008, the School had a total of 80% of its submissions recognised internationally as being of excellence or ofsignificance and originality.
Housed within the Law School building is a dedicated law library, which holds 55,000 volumes andsubscribes to all the main law journals and legal databases.
With a population of 1200, the Law School student community is thriving and diverse. The students runbusy undergraduate and postgraduate societies, and also a successful Mooting society. Students in the School also run a law clinic and publish a Student Law Review, which has a UK-wide circulation andholdings in some of the leading universities in the United States.
