Deadline: Jul 15, 2024
140 place StudyQA ranking:4199 Duration:2 years
The research-oriented Master's programme in Mathematics aims at students with special interest in mathematics as an exact science who want to acquire a broad and deep knowledge of the field.
The two-year English-taught programme offers basic and advanced lecture courses, "Research in Groups" courses (RiGs), and seminars. The courses cover a variety of topics of current research interest in many areas of pure and applied mathematics. See http://www.mathematik.uni-wuerzburg.de/research.html for a comprehensive list of research areas of our faculty.
The focus of the programme is to introduce students who are very early in their careers to research-oriented questions. The communication among students in seminars and RiGs is a central aspect of the programme. The institute offers excellent study conditions, very personal supervision in small groups, an internationally experienced team of professors, assistants, and staff members, and a well-stocked library.
Participants finish the programme with a Master's thesis.

Educational organisation

Students compose a study plan according to their own interests. General and exemplary study plans can be found on our website.
The programme (120 ECTS) is divided into three parts (lecture courses, RiGs, and thesis), extending over four semesters.
First three semesters (90 ECTS):
  • lecture courses (at least 30 ECTS)
  • "Research in Groups" courses and seminars (at least 20 ECTS)
Fourth semester:
  • Master's thesis (30 ECTS)

Study abroad unit(s)

Students have the possibility of spending a semester abroad, for instance by participating in the ERASMUS programme or other exchange programmes.

Forms of assessment

Lecture courses (5-10 ECTS): written or oral examination
"Research in Groups" courses or seminars (5-10 ECTS): oral presentation
Master's thesis (30 ECTS): graded by the adviser and another mathematics professor

Course objectives

Students in this programme achieve a wide-ranging qualification for independent research and acquire broad mathematical knowledge and skills which they can apply independently in new situations. Training in these skills is gained in particular by preparing talks for seminars and from independent work on the Master's thesis.
Our graduates pursue careers in a wide range of professions. Potential employers include universities, research institutes, companies involved in research and development, administration, as well as small and medium enterprises. Mathematicians typically engage in pure research or work in software development, management consulting, data security, communication, or information technology.

Language requirements

Applicants must provide proof of their English language skills, e.g. with a high school certificate comparable to the German Abitur or a TOEFL certificate. Our requirement for the TOEFL is 550 points (written test), 215 points (computer test), or 79 points (Internet-based test).

Academic requirements

Applicants must hold a Bachelor's degree in mathematics or an equivalent qualification in a similar field of study. Applicants are qualified if they can show proof of academic achievements that are equivalent to the qualification obtained in the Bachelor's degree programme in mathematics offered by the University of Würzburg and that meet the requirements of the respective Master's degree programme.

Enrolment fees

Approx. 110 EUR per semester. Fee includes a semester ticket covering public transportation in the Würzburg metropolitan area.

Costs of living

Approx. 600-700 EUR per month

Job opportunities

In order to defray the local expenses, qualified Master's students may apply for a job as a tutor within our undergraduate programme. As these classes are only taught in German language, a good command of German and the German mathematical terminology is an indispensable condition for employment.
