The Master's degree programme is a postgraduate course for students seeking further specialisation of their own choice. Students at the University of Regensburg can explore the following areas of research:
  • Arithmetic Geometry
  • Global Analysis and Geometry
  • Applied Analysis

At the end of the programme, students write their own academic paper - the Master's thesis. The Master's degree course at the University of Regensburg introduces students to current research issues in mathematics. It also provides a strong foundation to pursue a doctoral degree at an international level.
Thanks to the SFB "Higher Invariants" and the Graduate School, the mathematical faculty is highly visible internationally.
Students have the possibility to choose a minor subject and general courses.

Educational organisation

Successful completion of two of the three following elective modules is required (18 ECTS each):
  • Arithmetic Geometry (Algebraic Number Theory, Algebraic Geometry, ...)
  • Global Analysis and Geometry (Differential Geometry, Algebraic Topology, ...)
  • Applied Analysis (Functional Analysis, Partial Differential Equations, ...)

In addition, the student chooses an area of specialisation (18 ECTS have to be acquired), upon which the Master's thesis (30 ECTS) is focused. Also mandatory is a Seminar Module (9 ECTS).
In addition to the above mathematical courses, the student chooses a "minor subject" in which at least 12 ECTS are required. Possible minor subjects include: actuarial science, business administration, chemistry, computational science, philosophy, physics, economics or business informatics.
It is also possible to take further mathematical courses as a minor subject.
Another part are courses in areas of "general interest" (like a German language course) where at least 8 ECTS are required.
The general interest module covers the whole course programme of the university and opens up the possibility to acquire special professional and soft skills (for example, by attending language courses, presentation and rhetoric events, computer courses).

Study abroad unit(s)

Students have the possibility of spending a semester abroad, e.g. by participating in the ERASMUS Programme or applying to ALGANT Master, of which Regensburg is a node.

Forms of assessment

Lecture course examinations are either oral or written. Most lectures have 9 ECTS. In seminars (4.5 ECTS), the talks are given by the participants. The Master's thesis (30 ECTS) is graded by the advisor and a second mathematics professor.

Course objectives

The Master's degree Mathematics builds on a completed undergraduate degree in mathematics or a comparable degree. It is designed to provide students with a thorough scientific basis and knowledge, skills, and methods in the field of mathematics taking into account the requirements of the professional world. Graduates are capable of an independent and responsible evaluation of complex scientific problems and the practical application of solutions.

Language requirements

Proof of knowledge of English at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Proof is possible by an equivalent TOEFL or IELTS test, or by any other equivalent document.

Academic requirements

Good Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Mathematics or a closely related field
Applicants are qualified if they can show proof of academic achievements that are equivalent to the qualification obtained in the Bachelor's degree programme in Mathematics at the University of Regensburg and that meet the requirements of the respective Master's degree programme.

Enrolment fees

Approx. 140 EUR per semester (includes a public transport ticket valid for the entire semester)

Costs of living

You will need a minimum of about 670 EUR per month (including rent, food, clothing, insurance, books, and study materials).

Job opportunities

Students from EU member states and Switzerland do not need a work permit. Students from non-EU states who are registered at a German university are allowed to work 120 days per year.
Please note that almost all employers require good German language skills.

Funding opportunities within the university

Students can apply for financial aid from a Deutschlandstipendium.

Arrival support

The International Office offers the free orientation programme "Startklar", which supports incoming students with organisational matters such as bank accounts, health insurance, university enrolment, and the city's foreigners' registration office. The programme is also a first social meeting point. It serves to welcome the students to the university.

Services and support for international students

The International Office is the central meeting point for international students seeking support. During the semester, the International Coffee Hour offers opportunities to meet other international and German students. It meets twice a week. Furthermore, the semester programme of the International Office invites international students to participate in trips and social activities.

Accommodation

The International Office will try to assist students in finding a room in a student dormitory or on the private market. The price for a room in a student dormitory ranges from 200 to 270 EUR per month.
