Independent Study & Business Projects

We believe an MBA program helps students most when it gives them opportunities to test their knowledge outside the classroom. Independent Study projects bolster student learning acquired in the classroom and allow students to develop specialized knowledge to further their business and/or professional acumen. Currently students can pursue independent studies by serving as a teaching assistant, conducting faculty-directed research, or completing an unpaid internship during the academic year.

Some recent examples of Independent Study projects include:

  • Industry and market analysis for an alternative energy company seeking a new digital marketing platform
  • Market analysis of various geographies for a real estate development firm
  • Assessment of various investment options for a private equity firm
  • Development of mobile payment options for a software company seeking entry into foreign markets.

Resume

We typically expect the resume to be one page in length, two pages maximum. Include educational and employment history with titles and dates, in reverse chronological order.

Transcripts

We require transcripts of all academic work completed at the baccalaureate/undergraduate and graduate level. Unofficial transcripts may be uploaded to the online application for the purposes of application review, with official transcripts required upon admission and matriculation.

International candidates must have a college-level education equivalent to an American undergraduate or baccalaureate degree (the same as a first university degree). Generally this is a 4-year degree. There are a number of universities around the world that offer 3-year undergraduate programs. If you received a bachelor's degree upon completion of one of these 3-year undergraduate programs, you are eligible to apply to our program.

International applicants are required to submit copies of both your academic record and the diploma, degree certificate or other document indicating the date and conferral of your degree. If the original language of the academic record and diploma is not English, a certified literal (not interpretive) English translation must accompany the original document. If a certified copy of the original transcript is submitted, it must be certified by the institution from which the degree was received.

Applicants designate their recommenders within the application which triggers an e-mail directly to the recommender with specific instructions and a link to the recommendation form. Recommendations are due on the same date as your application. It is your responsibility to notify your chosen recommenders of this deadline. We offer a 10 business day grace period past the deadline to receive recommendations, but this will delay the processing of your application.

Interviews

All candidates who are offered admission to the MBA program will have a completed admissions interview on file.

UNC Kenan-Flagler's full-time MBA program offers two windows of opportunity to interview. During the Campus Open Interview Season, candidates are able to self-register for an interview to occur between September 6, 2016 and October 31, 2016. Candidates who do not interview during this time will be considered for an interview after their application has been submitted, during our Invitation-Only Interview Season (starting November 1, 2016).

Prospective candidates are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the Campus Open Interview Season since this is the only way to 100% guarantee an interview. On-campus interviews can be combined with our Campus Visit Program—an excellent way to get to know the UNC Kenan-Flagler community and MBA program.
