The Master of Industrial Design has a broad approach to design that emphasises the relevance and importance of design within contemporary society. The programme is founded on an Industrial Design tradition and promotes design that actively shapes our society, industry, organisations and daily life. Interaction Design, Service Design and Systems Oriented Design is included in the programme. This two-year Master reflects the rapidly emerging fields of design that respond to societal challenges, new technologies and increased complexity.

The teaching at AHO is based on an academic model where drawing board education and learning theoretical and technical disciplines through practical projects are central elements.

In the first two semesters students follow a studio course (24 ECTS) and an elective course(6 ECTS) of choice. In the third semester students follow a diploma programming course and a studio course of choice. The fourth and final semester is exclusively devoted to the diploma project (30 ECTS).

Candidates who complete the programme will be awarded the degree Master of Industrial Design.

Located in a vibrant and central part of Oslo, the school is a converted factory building, updated and modernised to suit the needs of its students. Studios, data labs, and workshops are open to students day and night. The school offers an international environment, nearly a 1/3 of the students at Masters level are international students. All Masters programmes are in English.

Students at AHO enjoy great learning facilities including:

* A personal work-space
* Access to workshops with main departments for wood, plastic and metal, a full scale construction hall and a rapid prototyping lab
* A comprehensive library
* A low faculty to student ratio of 1:8, encouraging individual development and collaboration.

AHO is a state owned institution and does not charge tuition fees. AHO students are members of The Foundation for Student Life in Oslo and Akershus which offers accommodation, medical services, sport centers and more.

The studio courses apply a form of teaching based on project work in a studio, which integrates teaching academic knowledge and skills as part of the project work. Studio teaching is an intensive form of teaching that entails a high exchange of knowledge between the teacher and student. Studio courses end with a run through of the students project work by appointed examiners, where at least one is an external examiner.

The elective courses are meant to supplement the Studio courses either from a practical or theoretical perspective.

Master of Industrial Design offers studio courses within product design, interaction design and system-service design. Students can either specialize within one of the brances or combine different type of courses for a broad industrial design competence.

AHO has a tradition of arranging an excursion/study trip each semester. The average duration is 1-2 weeks. The expenses are covered by the students themselves. Excursions are not compulsory, but AHO recommends that students take part.
