Biomedicine is an emerging field of science that applies the principles of natural sciences, especially biology, to investigate problems in clinical medicine.

In the University of Skövde, we offer a one-year Master program in Biomedicine that includes several advanced courses designed to afford you with hands-on-practice in this subject. The modules within this program will give you an in depth theoretical knowledge as well as advanced laboratory and methodological skills to prepare you for a professional career within the field of biomedicine in academic research or in the pharmaceutical industry.

What will you study?
The study year will provide you with a good understanding of the molecular and cellular processes involved in normal and disease conditions in the human body, with a special emphasis on genetics, tumor biology and pharmacology. The compulsory courses include lectures, laboratory works and seminars and are complemented with a set of elective courses.

After completed studies
The term biomedical career encompasses a broad spectra of professions that are generally related to medicine and health care. They include science and health professions such as academic researcher, research engineer, analyst, laboratory supervisor and other leading positions in clinical/medical research and development. Many people who have taken their degrees in biomedicine are employed at universities, research institutes, pharmaceutical industries, biotech companies, laboratories at county councils and public authorities, or pursue their education towards a PhD degree.

The training will also equip you with a good foundation for pursuing other types of science-related careers such as medical writer, journalist, patent-engineer, patent-lawyer, or for taking up a position at one of the control and inspection authority posts.

The programme comprises two semesters (60 higher education credits). Progression the first semester occurs at both advanced and broadened levels through specialized courses at an advanced level, where knowledge on molecular and cellular levels are integrated with a fundamental understanding of the function of the human organs and with complex physiological and molecular processes in healthy and sick individuals.

In all courses the first semester, the students get opportunities to develop their ability to seek information, to independently acquire and evaluate knowledge and to communicate biomedical research both orally and in writing.

During the second semester, the students complete the programme with an honours work of 30 higher education credits, in an area of research closely related to biomedicine. Furthermore, in the honours work, the students shall apply acquired knowledges in biomedicine to solve a relevant scientific problem within the field.

The study programme comprises the following courses:

* Master Project in Biomedicine A1E, 30 hp

Optional Courses:

* Pharmacology II G2F, 7.5 hp
* Bioinformatics Concepts and Methods A1F, 7.5 hp
* Endocrinology A1N, 7.5 hp
* Experiment Design A1N, 7.5 hp
* Experimental Biomedicine A1N, 7.5 hp
* Genomics A1N, 7.5 hp
* Molecular Markers for Diagnosis and Prognosis A1F, 7.5 hp
* Toxicology A1N, 7.5 hp
* Tumor Biology A1N, 7.5 hp

A Bachelor degree of at least 180 higher education credits (equivalent to 180 ECTS) within the fields of biomedicine, biology, pharmacy, medicine, odontology or veterinary medicine. A further requirement is proof of skills in English equivalent of studies at upper secondary level in Sweden, known as English course 6 / English course B. This is normally demonstrated by means of an internationally recognized test, e g IELTS or TOEFL or the equivalent.
