The Master of Engineering Studies is a course-based programme with the option to include a research project, and is aimed at providing an advanced technical or management foundation and industrial perspective.

The programme is aimed at students with an academic engineering background who wish to continue their studies at an advanced level, develop an advanced technical foundation and gain an industrial perspective in a specialised area.

The programme is offered in sixteen specialisations, some with a structured set of course requirements and others with more flexible course options and electives.

There are 2 options of studying :

  • Option A - 120 points in 1 year (full-time study) or up to 4 years (part-time study)
  • Option B (Not currently available in all specialisations)  - 180 points in 18 months or up to 6 years (part-time study)

Specialisations

The Master in Engineering Studies is available in two options, each currently offered in the following specialisations with either a  taught (T) and/or research (R) focus. The taught option is predominantly course-based, whereas the research option requires the completion of a 90 point research portfolio.

Some specialisations offer a flexible course structure where you can tailor your learning to suit your interests, whilst others require the completion of a structured set of courses.

Entry requirements

The Master of Engineering Studies can be completed via Option A or B.

  • Option A is intended for students who have a four year Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) or equivalent qualification.
  • Option B is intended for students who have an appropriate three year bachelors degree.

Some specialisations also have additional entry requirements, eg, at least three years industry experience.

Minimum postgraduate English language requirements for 2017

  • IELTS (Academic): Overall score of 6.5 and all bands 6.0 or better
  • Internet-based TOEFL (iBT): Overall score of 90 plus a written score of 21
  • Paper-based TOEFL: Overall score of 575 plus Essay (TWE) of 4.5
  • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) and Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE): Overall score of 176 and all bands 169 or better
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: Overall score of 58 and no PTE communicative skills score below 50. 
  • Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): 85
