Engineering Materials Science sets out to give universal solutions from science to various research challenges faced by industry. Our ambitious yet highly fascinating mission is to help find and develop the best possible materials for different purposes in all aspects of life. We are keen on utilizing new breakthrough materials in solving future issues related to the environment, energy and human welfare.

After graduating from our Engineering Materials Science Programme, you will be able to understand the technological and economic problems within the industry, analyse and refine the problems into scientific research questions, and use scientific methods to solve the problems to improve the competitiveness and performance of materials.

Majors offered

Metallic and Ceramic Materials

Major studies in Metallic and Ceramic Materials provide you with broad knowledge of the relationships between the composition, processing, structure and properties of metals and ceramic materials. Understanding and utilizing these correlations is essential for finding the most suitable existing materials, or developing new materials that meet the requirements of different applications. At Tampere University of Technology, metallic and ceramic materials have been studied and developed for decades in close collaboration with domestic and international partners. In addition to basic knowledge of these materials, this major will give you state-of-the-art knowledge of recent developments, for example, in the fields of advanced steel technology, nano- and ultrafine-grained metals and alloys, functional materials, and advanced ceramic sciences.

Polymeric Materials

Polymers, elastomers and composite materials are becoming increasingly important in many areas of engineering, such as injection moulded parts for electronic consumer goods, elastomers in transportation, composites used in aeronautical engineering, and various biomedical applications in medical sciences. The major in Polymeric materials provides students with a solid foundation in these materials, their structure and properties. The major in Polymeric materials gives students broad knowledge of various polymers, elastomers and composite materials, with a special emphasis on the properties and structure of materials. After completing the major, students will be able to promote environmentally friendly and cost-effective material and process management.

Mechanics of Materials

Major and minor studies in the Mechanics of Materials provide students with strong knowledge of materials engineering. After completing the module, students will have a deep understanding of the plastic and elastic behaviour of materials and their numerical and constitutive modeling.

The focus area of Mechanics of Materials can be studied at the Departamento de Ciencia de la Materiales of the Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), and therefore students have to apply for admission to the module after being accepted to our master's programme. The focus area is available in the second academic year. Students seeking admission to the module are selected based on their academic performance at TUT, demonstrated level of motivation, and the overall suitability of the proposed studies in their Personal Study Plan.

Understanding the mechanical behavior and properties of various materials at different conditions is extremely important for the efficient design of components and structures. The requirement to develop more environmentally friendly and at the same time stronger and more durable components and structures cannot be met without a comprehensive understanding of the mechanics of materials.

Along skilled professors, teachers and researchers, the programme also attracts students who have an interest in becoming true materials science professionals and gaining the required knowledge so that they can advance further with their studies. The applicants who aspire to join the programme should demonstrate excellent academic performance, good English language skills and creative abilities. Applicants must hold a three- or four-year Bachelor of Science degree from an internationally recognized university. The overall grade (CGPA) of the degree should be at least 70 % of the maximum marks. Students admitted to the programme may be required to complement their earlier degree with complementary studies. The field of the BSc degree must be one of the following:

  • materials science
  • physical or process metallurgy
  • ceramic science
  • polymer science

Also the following fields are suitable; with some materials studies included:

  • mechanical engineering
  • aeronautical engineering
  • other discipline closely related to the programme

Tuition fees for english-taught degree programmes:

  • 10 000 € per academic year for the Bachelor’s programme
  • 12 000 € per academic year for all Master’s level programmes

For students who are citizens of countries within the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland, studies in all degree programmes will remain free of charge. Tuition fees will also not affect those non-EU/EEA students who have the right to permanent residence in Finland (residence permits A, P and P-EU).

TUT offers a generous scholarship programme for fee-paying students. With the help of the TUT scholarship, TUT continues to provide excellent international students with high-quality, yet affordable, education. The TUT scholarship programme consists of the TUT academic excellence scholarship and tuition fee waivers.

TUT academic excellence scholarship

In 2018, TUT is awarding the TUT academic excellence scholarship to up to ten of the most talented applicants. The TUT academic excellence scholarships include a full tuition fee waiver as well as an allowance of 7000 € per academic year to cover living costs. The scholarships are awarded for an academic year and considered on an annual basis.

Tuition fee waivers

The majority of TUT scholarships are awarded as tuition fee waivers to the most talented students. The fee waivers awarded may cover either 50 % or 100 % of the full tuition fee. Tuition fee waivers are awarded during the admissions process or can be earned during the studies. The tuition fee waivers awarded in conjunction with the student admission process are full tuition fee waivers which cover 100 % of the tuition fee. The tuition fee waiver is awarded to a sizeable proportion of the admitted students.

All the way to the doctoral degree

Due to the top-quality research done in the department, it is not uncommon for graduates to continue working in the academia as scientists or to pursue a doctoral degree. In fact, the Master’s programme in Engineering Materials works as the perfect platform for research-minded students to head for a PhD, as research is an inseparable part of our teaching. The university offers its own internal funding programme for postgraduate studies that is a great opportunity for someone seeking a PhD, but, as a reflection of that, also highly competitive.

Versatile career opportunities

The most significant feature characterizing the career opportunities in Engineering Materials Science is versatility. Describing the career path of a typical graduate is not straight forward, as materials expertise is needed in multiple fields of industry in the development and maintenance of their processes. Finnish industry today boasts a wide variety of career opportunities ranging from the modern steel industry and the production of heavy machinery to the production and design of electronic components, such as mobile phones and semiconductor devices.

The degree will provide you with a wide range of possibilities, which will be defined during the final stages of the studies and the Master’s thesis phase. By making certain choices during your studies, you will be able to tailor your degree towards the desired direction to pursue your dream career.
