This innovative and dynamic MA Media and Communications Managament focuses on communication strategies, promotion and journalism in the media and cultural industries and the knowledge economy. Combining theoretical and practical components, it is designed to give you a sound critical understanding of key aspects of the contemporary media, and to experience different areas of media production and work. This masters is particularly aimed at people interested in, or working in, journalism and news production, public and media relations.

The MA covers key subjects related to the structure and role of the media and publicity industries and the relationships and inter-connections between publicity, journalism and promotion. The course will encourage you to develop a critical understanding of contemporary social, cultural and economic processes and to relate these to the rapid and ongoing transformation in the media and publicity sectors. The work based learning-placement and the practical components of the course will enable you to apply the theoretical aspects of the course in specific projects and in the workplace.

We welcome applications from graduates with a good honours degree, or equivalent qualification, in an appropriate subject. Those without formal qualifications need to demonstrate relevant work experience and the ability to study at postgraduate level.English language requirements

You must have competence in English language and we normally require Grade C GCSE or an equivalent qualification. The most common English Language requirements for international students are IELTS 6.5 (with minimum 6.0 in all four components) or TOEFL paper based 575 (no less than 4.5 in test of written English) or TOEFL internet based 90 (with no less than 19 in each component)

General funding for your postgraduate study

Professional and Career Development Loans

These are bank loans that can be used to help pay for work related learning. You can borrow between £300 and £10,000 to help support the cost of up to two years of learning (or three years if it includes one year's relevant unpaid practical work). The Young People's Learning Agency will pay the interest on the loan while you are learning and for one month afterwards. The loan can be used to pay course fees or other costs such as travel and living expenses. You can also use the loan to supplement other forms of support such as grants or bursaries. Because the Professional and Career Development Loan is a commercial loan product, they should only be considered as an option once all other student funding options have been investigated.

Bursaries

Some organisations will offer study bursaries for an array of different courses. Postgrad Solution Ltd is offering postgraduate students the opportunity to receive a bursary of £500 each to help with fees. The deadline for application is 18 August 2011 and awards are judged by a panel based on a written application. Applicants must have been accepted onto a postgraduate course before applying

Employer sponsorship

If you are working, your employer may sponsor you if your studies or research will benefit your professional role.

Charitable sources

Charities sometimes make awards, some of which are restricted to applicants who qualify under the particular terms of the charity. They are made available for specific purposes, and do not cover three years of fees and living expenses. The major charities that may be able to assist include: The Wellcome Foundation, The Nuffield Foundation and The Leverhulme Trust.

Overseas funding

The British Government and other organisations offer a number of scholarships and grants on a competitive basis for overseas students to study and conduct research here. For general information on funding for students from overseas, contact your nearest British Council office.
