This course will introduce you to the values, skills and competencies required for the practice of social work. It provides graduates with the opportunity to train as social workers to the standard prescribed as qualifying level by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC).

The higher exit option (MSc) is an academic award based on research rather than a professional award, and offers a methodological underpinning for those seeking to move into research or training in social work. As a graduate of this course you will be capable of gaining employment in areas where a professional qualification in social work is required, including field work,group care, community care and hospital settings in the public, voluntary and private sectors.

Students are required to attend 2 teaching blocks per year of study at the University, each lasting 1 week. These teaching blocks provide a variety of important functions including:

* Important introductions to forthcoming modules of study
* Opportunities for students to meet to share ideas and learning
* Dissemination of current theoretical concepts and policy
* In addition to on line discussion groups, email and telephone contact with personal tutors, students benefit from monthly group and/or individual tutorials, where appropriate, in their local area led by their personal tutor

You should have a first degree in a social science discipline. Other qualifications and experience will be considered, with entry being subject to the University's judgement that the person has reasonable expectation of being able to fulfil the requirements of the award.An acceptable level of numeracy in Maths is normally required, as is evidence of computer literacy at the level required for the European Computer Driving Licence. Some experience in a caring or closely allied field is normally required, as well as basic knowledge of the UK legal and political system.All international students for whom English is not their first language must provide evidence of linguistic ability, by gaining either IELTS 7 or its equivalent in TOEFL, prior to receiving an unconditional offer of a place on the course. English Language Requirements IELTS band: 7 TOEFL iBT® test: 90 IMPORTANT NOTE: Since April 2014 the ETS tests (including TOEFL and TOEIC) are no longer accepted for Tier 4 visa applications to the United Kingdom. The university might still accept these tests to admit you to the university, but if you require a Tier 4 visa to enter the UK and begin your degree programme, these tests will not be sufficient to obtain your Visa.
