The masters degree in Pharmacology equips its students with the skills needed in pre-clinical or clinical drugs research and the application of this in drug therapy, so that they can join the profession or go on to doctoral studies.

Students will acquire both knowledge of the scientific, ethical and social fundamentals of pharmacologyand practical skills and attitudes that will enable them to apply this knowledge to drug development and use.

Career options

The Master's Degree in Pharmacology of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona leads to three types of career options in Pharmacology:

a) Pre-clinical or clinical experimental pharmacology

b) Management of research in pharmacology and its results.

c) Commercial Specialist.

These careers are pursued mainly in two sectors, each of which includes several of the above options:
- Business: in the pharmaceutical or biotechnological industry or in clinical research organisations (CRO) as a pre-clinical or clinical researcher, clinical trials supervisor, research manager (head of R+D+I projects, head of research subcontracting), commercial specialist (product director or drug project director).
- Administration: in regulatory agencies or healthcare administrations as an expert in drug registration and authorisation, research quality control, ethics committees, etc.
Yet another option is to take up Doctoral studies.

The master's degree comprises 60 credits and is made up of 4 compulsory modules and 2 optional ones. The compulsory modules include two in advanced basic pharmacology and applied pharmacology, one fort the work placement, for 15 credits and the master's dissertation, also for 15 credits. The optional modules let students choose between research methods in clinical pharmacology and research methods in pre-clinical pharmacology.

The ideal profile for this Master's degree is a person interested in developing their professional career in the research or management areas of the private sector, in public research institutions devoted to the field of biomedicine, or in hospitals with pharmacology research programmes for different services and departments. Other persons interested in this Master's degree are those wishing to continue onto the research specialisation of a doctoral programme in any of the areas of experimental or health fields.

Access to this master's degree is open to holders of an official bachelor's degree from a Spanish university or from another higher education institution within or outside the European Higher Education Area, provided this gives access to postgraduate studies in the country of issue.Admission requirements * Bachelor's degree in Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Odontology, Nursing, Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Psychology or other subjects within the health or experimental sciences in the Spanish system. * European bachelor's degree in one of the above subjects, with a minimum of 180 ECTS credits Students following the research track with a 180-ECTS bachelor's degree will have to take the remaining credits through experimental modules of related university master's degrees. * Graduates from outside the EU: must certify that they possess a degree in one of the above subjects with official recognition in the issuing country.
