The MA Healthcare Education is a dynamic new programme developed in response to a growing need for practitioners to align with emerging policy agenda and develop knowledge and understanding of learning and teaching within a variety of settings.

It provides a platform from which students can develop a comprehensive range of skills, to direct their own learning and development and that of others, enabling students to widen their appreciation and application of learning, teaching and assessing approaches in the practice and academic settings.

The course seeks to develop the skills required to teach, supervise and assess students and other practitioners, be they pre or post-registration, undergraduate or postgraduate learners, in the higher education or clinical practice setting. It aims to develop the skills practitioners require to identify and promote initiatives which develop the culture for continuing professional development.

Throughout this course, students are encouraged to consider new and developing digital technologies used to support healthcare education.

The programme is NMC approved for Practice Teachers and Teachers; AHP Educator accreditation schemes and Higher Education Academy Fellowships.

This course is offered via either a blended programme incorporating classroom and virtual learning based activities, or an innovative distance learning pathway.

Blended programme
The blended programme is aimed at healthcare educators, allied health professionals, nurses, midwives and health visitors who wish to meet regulatory and professional standards for education within both practice and academic settings. This course will enable students to meet the NMC Stage 3 Practice teacher, NMC Stage 4 teacher, Chartered Society of Physiotherapists Clinical Educator, Society of Radiographers Practice Educator and College of Occupational Therapists Practice Placement Educator Standards. Completion of the PGC element will entitle students to apply for a Higher Education Academy Fellowship a UK recognised teaching qualification within the Higher Education sector.

Distance learning pathway
The innovative distance learning pathway is aimed at UK and international health and social care professionals and healthcare educators who wish to explore the concepts and principles of healthcare education in relation to their own practice. The course team use a wide variety of teaching methods to engage, support and collaborate with students throughout the programme. Face to face attendance is not required.

Course Structure
The course is a part-time programme designed to provide students with choice and flexibility through the option of studying through a blended learning or distance learning pathway. The Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare Education offers modules both as blended or distance learning; the Postgraduate Diploma is offered as distance learning only, whilst the Master dissertation is again offered as blended or distance learning.

Further Information
Previous Students feedback on the programme:

Brilliant support from the lecturers, I have learnt so much and supports my professional development
"It's good that there are no right or wrong answers at a Masters Level, it provides me the freedom to explore further"

"Being in a small cohort and from various healthcare backgrounds it worked really well"

I thoroughly enjoyed completing the MA in Healthcare Education. Certain aspects were challenging but through appropriate support of the lecturing staff, I have been able to progress further than I dared imagine (as propounded by Vygotsky and their theory of ZPD - Zone of Proximal Development!). See, I have learnt something from the course! I thoroughly enjoyed completing the MA in Healthcare Education as I looked to the future with my career progression. I have had the opportunity to view the newly validated MA and am so envious of the students who are about to embark upon it - you lucky people, enjoy your studies at UCS!

UCS Financial Support
UCS Bursary 2013 Entry

From September 2013, UCS is introducing a new bursary scheme for students living away from the parental home, to help with accommodation costs while studying.

Successful applicants will receive a £1,000 bursary in their first year of study and a £500 bursary in both their second and third years of study.

National Scholarship Programme

The National Scholarship Programme (NSP) has been created to offer support to students from lower income backgrounds. The Government has awarded a number of Scholarships to UCS for students starting an undergraduate degree in September 2013. UCS has committed to matching these Scholarships, providing fee waivers to a larger number of students.

Successful full-time applicants will receive a total fee waiver of £6,000; £3,000 in their first year of study and £3,000 in their second year of study.

Successful part-time applicants will receive a fee waiver on a pro rata basis for their first and second years of study. For example part-time students studying 50% of the full time equivalent course in their first year will receive a fee waiver of £1,500.

Suffolk Access Champion Scheme

The Suffolk Access Champion Scheme is open to students who have studied in Suffolk and are applying to study a full-time undergraduate degree programme at UCS in 2013/14.

Successful applicants will become Suffolk Access Champions and will work over two years mentoring Year 10 and 11 students to encourage progression on to higher education.

In return for their participation in the scheme, Access Champions will receive a total fee waiver of £8,000; £5,000 in their first year of study and £3,000 in their second year of study.

UCS Science Fee Waiver

UCS is introducing a new Science fee waiver for students starting one of the four year science programmes in 2013. This scheme entitles successful applicants to a fee waiver of up to £1,500 across years two and three of their degree.

Ipswich Borough Council and UCS Bursary

Ipswich Borough Council (IBC) is working in conjunction with UCS to offer a non-repayable bursary scheme to selected full and part-time students from lower income backgrounds to help with costs associated with their course of study.

A total of four IBC and UCS bursaries are available in 2013/14. Successful applicants will receive £1,000 in their first year of study. Awards are expected to continue into Year 2 of study on the condition that household income remains within the scheme threshold

Accreditation

University Campus Suffolk recognises the need for an Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) Policy as part of its mission to widen participation. The Policy acknowledges that the uses of APL will vary between courses and that the needs of the course and student group may differ accordingly. The overall aim of the Policy is to provide a framework within which APL may be implemented flexibly and fairly.

What is APL?

Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) is the generic term used for the award of credit on the basis of demonstrated learning that has occurred at some time in the past. The process acknowledges that adults can learn not only by attending courses but also through paid or unpaid work, and their own self directed learning.

Within APL there are two main categories:

APCL the Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning, that is, learning for which certification has been awarded by an educational institution or another education/training provider;

APEL the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning, that is, uncertificated learning gained from experience.
