    The Master program in Language, Society and Communication is taught at the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures of the School of Languages and Literatures, Translation and Interpretation at the University of Bologna.     In 2nd year, students must present the Final Degree Thesis according to the degree programme regulations.

    Final examination

    Students must present an original degree thesis that foresees an amount of research equal to the number of credits required, on linguistic aspects elaborated upon in the curricular scientific-disciplinary fields.

    Requirements for non-EU students

    Non-EU students with residency abroad, pre-enrolment at Italian Embassies and entry visa. Every year, a quota of reserved places for non-EU students with residency abroad is set for each degree programme.

    Find out how many reserved places there are by consulting the online database on the MIUR website. For restricted access degree programmes, the quota is also indicated in the calls for applications. For enrollment, first submit your application for pre-enrolment (Form A) at an Italian Embassy (or Consulate) in the country you live in (only under exceptional circumstances can you contact an Italian Embassy in a third-party country, and in such cases the Embassy may refuse your application).

    You will be able to pre-enrol for a.y. at the Italian Embassy or Consulate in your country in April/May. This page will be updated with more detailed information as soon as the Italian Ministry for Education, University and Research (MIUR) will set pre-enrolment deadlines for a.y.

    Important: pre-enrolment at the Italian Embassy alone does not grant admission to degree programmes. In order to matriculate you also need to complete the admission procedures required by the University of Bologna for the degree programme you have chosen.

    Required documents

    You must take the following documents to the Italian Embassy:

    • the application for pre-enrolment (Form A) duly completed;
    • any language competence certificates (for more details please refer to the information provided concerning the possibility for exemption from the Italian language test and exemption from the Italian language test and the quota);
    • two passport photos; 
    • the documents required for the visa application, including a health insurance policy where applicable;
    • the required documents if you hold a foreign qualification.

    • an entry visa to Italy for study  purposes (“studio- immatricolazione università”);
    • a stamped health insurance policy, where applicable;

    Itailan Language test

    Italian language test and exemptions from the reserved quota for non-EU students with residency abroad

    If you are a non-EU students with residency abroad and you want to enrol in a degree programme taught in the Italian language, you must successfully pass an Italian language test. After passing the Italian language test, you also need to complete the admission procedures set for the degree programme you have chosen. The University of Bologna offers Italian language courses to international students.

    1. Curricular requirementsFor a proficient attendance to the 2nd cycle Degree Programme in Language, society and communication it is necessary to possess a three-year degree title (ex Ministerial Decree 270/04 or ex Ministerial Decree 509/99), or a four-year degree title achieved under the previous university system, or other foreign qualification/s recognized as suitable for access to 2nd cycle university studies.For admission to the Master's Degree Course it is also necessary to meet the following requirements:having acquired· 48 cfu in the two foreign languages studied in the previous university degree programme (24 in the first + 24 in the second language), pertaining to the following groups:L-LIN/04 Language and translation- FrenchL-LIN/06 Hispano-American Languages and LiteraturesL-LIN/07 Language and translation- SpanishL-LIN/11 Anglo-American Languages and LiteraturesL-LIN/12 Language and translation- EnglishL-LIN/14 Language and translation- GermanL-LIN/21 Slavisticsprovided that the corresponding course units are active in the academic year of enrolment to this master's degree programmeExams from L-LIN/06 and L-LIN/11 groups only refer to languages ones, not literatures. To be admitted to the preliminary evaluation, students have to send the documentation about these exams to the Board of examiners.Only for students who hold a foreign degree title for which requirements cannot be defined in terms of cfu, admission to the Master's degree Programme is subject to a preliminary evaluation by a Board of examiners that will assess the students' knowledge and abilities through an oral exam.The Board of examiners, appointed by the Degree Course Council, will personally make an appointment with the student him/herself.Should the Board of examiners positively assess graduates' knowledge and abilities, they will be qualified to be admitted to the Course, provided that also the personal background knowledge of candidates is considered adequate.2. Assessment of the personal background knowledge adequacyThe admission to the Course is also subject to the assessment of the personal background knowledge adequacy. This assessment is fulfilled by having obtained a minimum degree mark that is established every year by School Members.For the academic year 2013/14 the minimum mark required, as provided for by the Degree Course Council, is set to a score equal or higher than 100/110.Students who hold a foreign degree title that does not assign a final mark or provides an evaluation that cannot be converted into the Italian evaluation system, will have to fulfil the assessment through an oral exam (also via videoconference). As an alternative, candidates can produce their personal documentation and a detailed CV to the board of examiners. The Board of examiners, appointed by the Degree Course Council, will personally make an appointment with the student him/herself. Should the Board of examiners positively assess graduates' knowledge and abilities, they will be qualified to be admitted to the Course and therefore to enrol.Only the students who hold a foreign degree title can send their personal documentation to the board of examiners president, Ms M. Rieger: marie.rieger@unibo.itThe Degree Course Council considers the possibility of exempting students from the assessment of the personal background knowledge adequacy, provided that they meet the requirements (as listed in 1.), in the following cases: * suspension/interruption or withdrawal from studies * loss of the student status * transfer to a degree programme running under the reformed system * possession of an academic title or cfu from course units/activities attended and assessed abroad * change of degree programme within the University of Bologna * transfer from another UniversityFor the academic year 2013/14 the Degree course Council has provided that no student will be exempted from the assessment of the personal background knowledge adequacy.
    The grants are available to attend academic course Language, Society and Communication in Italy. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) offers grants in favor of foreign citizens not residing in Italy and Italian citizens living abroad (IRE) for this academic year in order to foster international cultural, scientific and technological cooperation, to promote Italian language and culture and to support Italy’s economic system in the world (According to Law 288/55 and its subsequent changes and additions).
