Advanced Practice in Health and Social Care (Adult Mental Health)

The MSc Advanced Practice in Health and Social Care (Adult Mental Health) course is for all healthcare professionals working in mental health services. The course provides students the skills, knowledge and awareness in the assessment and formulation of mental health problems, evidence-based psychosocial interventions and contemporary issues in mental health.

Students have the opportunity to discuss key debates in health and social care provision in multi-professional and interdisciplinary contexts. This course is designed to enhance the abilities of health professionals to critically evaluate approaches to mental health care and consider innovative ways of meeting the mental health needs of individuals and communities.

Who is the course for?
The course is for all healthcare professionals working in mental health services including nurses, social workers, psychologists, other clinical staff, and workers from a wide range of allied statutory and voluntary agencies. The course develops the knowledge and skills to enable practitioners to work effectively with colleagues from a range of professional backgrounds, and to critically explore the dynamics and challenges of working in this context and consider innovative ways of meeting the mental health needs of individuals and communities.

Students undertake three core modules, three core elective modules and two optional modules.

Core modules:

* Introduction to Research Methods and Data Analysis for Evidence-based Practice (30 credits)
* Critical Approaches to Advanced Practice (15 credits)
* Dissertation (60 credits)

Core elective modules:

* Assessing and understanding mental health problems (15 credits)
* Evidence-based psychosocial interventions in mental health (15 credits)
* Contemporary issues in mental health (15 credits)

Optional modules:

* Dementia care (15 credits)
* Partnership in Practice (15 credits)
* Work-based learning (15 credits)
* Liaison mental health care (15 credits)

Or students may undertake a module from the Advanced Practice in Health and Social Care (Child and Adolescent Mental Health) course.

Students are normally required to complete all the taught modules successfully before progressing to the dissertation.

A first degree in a relevant subject. Exceptional applicants without a first degree may be considered.English Language requirements:For students whose first language is not English, one of the following is also required: * A first degree from a UK university or an overseas institution recognised by the University as providing adequate evidence of proficiency in the English language, for example, from institutions in Australia, Canada or the USA * IELTS: 7.0 * TOEFL (internet based): 107 * Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: 72 * Other evidence of proficiency in the English language, which satisfies the board of studies concerned. English Language Requirements IELTS band: 7 TOEFL iBT® test: 107 IMPORTANT NOTE: Since April 2014 the ETS tests (including TOEFL and TOEIC) are no longer accepted for Tier 4 visa applications to the United Kingdom. The university might still accept these tests to admit you to the university, but if you require a Tier 4 visa to enter the UK and begin your degree programme, these tests will not be sufficient to obtain your Visa. A professional qualification with at least a year of experience in the following: voluntary sector; social work; education; primary care; mental health nursing; psychology; psychiatry; criminal justice; residential work; and those who are currently working in an agency with responsibility for aspects of interprofessional practice relating to their own discipline.
