A total of 42 semester hours is required to complete this degree offered through the Public Health graduate program. The program is a professional degree that requires a core of public health courses (14 credit hours), a field experience or masters thesis (6 credit hours), and an area of emphasis determined by the students program committee (22 credit hours). An area of emphasis may be selected from food safety and biosecurity, infectious diseases/zoonoses, public health human nutrition, or public health physical activity.

The field of public health involves programs, strategies, and interventions designed to protect and improve community health through health education, promotion, research, and disease prevention. The final outcome of all public health efforts is to improve the quality of life in communities as well as targeted populations. The MPH program includes the five core areas within the field of public health: environmental health, behavioral sciences/health education, epidemiology, biostatistics, and health services administration. In addition to the five core areas, a student can select an area of emphasis in food safety and biosecurity, infectious diseases/zoonoses, public health nutrition, or public health physical activity.

An applicant to the Graduate School at Kansas State University must have a bachelor's degree substantially the same as the ones granted by Kansas State University. That is, it must represent a broad range of courses in the basic academic disciplines. Applicants whose degrees do not meet these standards may be denied admission to graduate degree programs at Kansas State University.Admission is denied to applicants holding bachelor's degrees with a significant amount of credit for work that was not supervised by a faculty member of an accredited college or university or evaluated in units that identify the academic content.
