A research-based programme
The Master's programme in Assyriology is a research-based programme. The research field focuses on analysing and editing of texts and issues, for example the following two projects:

'The Old Assyrian Text Project', an international research project in which a number of researchers from Copenhagen, Leiden, Paris and Mainz are editing and working on publishing comprehensive Assyrian merchant's records from central Turkey 2000 BC.

Another project is the recently established Center for Canon and Identity Formation, which, in collaboration with the Egyptology programme, examines different aspects of human intellectual history.

Career opportunities
The programme in Assyriology is mainly aimed at employment within teaching, research and at museums. The number of jobs within the area is, however, very limited, so it is a good idea to supplement your studies with courses in, for example, culture dissemination, information technology and administration. Graduates have found employment in ministries, with local authorities, in the travel industry, in the communication sector and at publishing houses.

Upon completion of the Master of Arts in Assyriology the student has acquired:
* academic skills based on the ability to work independently on projects using source material written in Old Babylonian Akkadian and Sumerian;
* familiarity with Assyriology's research traditions, including aspects of linguistic theory and methodology;
* the ability to approach scientific methods and theories critically;
* analytical skills documented by the Master's thesis (80 pages) that must be completed within six months.

The candidate must in his or her thesis show an ability to apply the scientific methods and theories related to a specific subject and clearly communicate the ideas and results of the thesis. The thesis should be around 80 pages, not counting notes and bibliography, and include various source materials in cuneiform texts.
