The MSc can be undertaken over one year (full-time) or two years (part-time). You will focus on the production, critical appraisal and use of scientifically rigorous research evidence, applied to a range of health-related areas. This programme is particularly relevant to science and social science graduates and healthcare professionals who wish to develop their health-related research and evaluation skills, and to people from any health-related background interested in a career in health services research. A number of our students on this pathway have upgraded to MPhil or PhD study. The MSc in Applied Health Research involves a one-year full-time or two-year part-time Masters programme (180 credits), with the option to exit from the course with a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Health Research after successful completion of 120 credits of taught modules.

The compulsory modules worth 80 credits are: * Research Methods (20 credits)
* Health and Social Statistics 1 (10 credits)
* Epidemiology (10 credits)
* Randomised Controlled Trials (10 credits)
* Systematic Reviews (10 credits)
* Qualitative Methods Applied to Health Research (10 credits)
* Health Economics (10 credits)

In addition you will choose modules worth 40 credits from the following: * Health and Illness in Society (20 credits)
* Health Policy - Principles, Practice and the Evidence Base (10 credits)
* Health and Social Statistics 2 (10 credits)
* Understanding Clinical Statistics (10 credits)
* Health and Social Statistics 3 (10 credits)
* Infection and Disease (20 credits)
* Public Health Foundations in Practice (20 credits)

There may be some flexibility to attend further modules where the timetable allows. Research project The research project contributes 60 credits to your degree. You will be matched with a supervisor with complementary research interests, and together you will design an appropriate project, using the skills and techniques taught in the modules. You have substantial choice in your area of research, and for part-time students in employment, the project can represent an area that is of interest and value to your employer.
