New materials, processes and activities; changing social and employment patterns; increases in population density and a developing environmental awareness all serve to create conditions that encourage the questioning of traditional approaches to the creation of built space and provide the incentive to explore alternatives.

MA Interior Architecture provides a structured postgraduate programme within which to test and extend the boundaries of interior architecture by means of a major, self-initiated, research project. It offers a creative, dynamic and supportive environment within which to explore and develop new ideas in architectural design.

This masters programme attracts graduates, practising designers and mid-career professionals from a wide range of architectural and allied disciplines.

The programme encourages a reflective approach to design within which a personal project will be initiated and developed. This project may take the form of creative work with an accompanying report and presentation or, alternatively, a written and illustrated dissertation. The presentation of the final outcome of your study will be limited only by your imagination and the need for contextual appropriateness.

Your work will be supported by regular multi-disciplinary seminars and by weekly tutorials. Stage One of the programme introduces the fundamentals of postgraduate research, the principles of which will inform the subsequent stages of the programme.

Full-time students attend one day a week; devoting the remaining time to self-directed study. Part time students attend one day a week over two years.

Intermediate assessments at Stages 1 and 2 are by coursework and oral presentations. Stage 3 final assessment is based on the completed project work and report or dissertation together with an oral presentation. The work is expected to exceed, in terms of depth and scope, that which would be expected at undergraduate level.

We normally expect a second class honours degree or above in a design-related discipline or an equivalent professional qualification. The capacity to engage in critical debate, both orally and in writing, is essential. All applications must be accompanied by a portfolio of work, which may be on disc or as hard copy, but not exceeding A3-size. Applicants will be interviewed. Overseas applicants unable to attend an interview should send photocopies, slides, or a disc with their work in PowerPoint or PDF format, supported by a brief caption, stating the purpose and context of the work submitted.English Language RequirementsIf your first language is not English, you should have a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 or TOEFL 575 (paper-based), 231 (computer-based).
