This programme provides advanced training in modern drug chemistry both organic and medicinal. You will cover the following areas:

* how new drugs are developed: conception, application, testing and industrial production
* chemistry pertinent to drug design
* essential topics of drug design
* potential therapies not yet established commercially
* laboratory work, including COSHH and safety

This programme aims to provide you with advanced knowledge and skills in:

* practical laboratory chemistry
* data analysis and numeracy
* spectroscopy and chemical characterisation
* specialist aspects of drug chemistry
* research methods

Research projects provide hands-on experience of working within a medicinal chemistry team and provide training in both laboratory and analytical skills. Previous projects have involved the synthesis of anti-biotic, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic and anti-cancer compounds. Projects have also focused on modern medicinal natural product chemistry.

We provide an ideal setting for the study of drug chemistry with state of the art, modern teaching and research facilities along with a major research strength in drug and medicinal chemistry. We have strong links with research groups in the pharmaceutical industry and Newcastle Medical School.

Compulsory modules
* CHY8810 Research Preparation and Development
* CHY8811 Research Project and Dissertation
* CHY8820 Organic Synthesis for Drug Targets
* CHY8821 Modern Methods in Drug Discovery
* CHY8822 Drug Metabloism and Toxicology
* CHY8823 Theory and Practice of Chemotherapy
* CHY8824 Methods and Techniques for Drug Chemistry

If your native language is not English you will also take the following compulsory module:

* INU8001 Writing Dissertations in Science and Engineering

Otherwise you will take:

* CHY8828 Bioactive Natural Products

A lower-second-class BSc Honours degree, or international equivalent, in a chemistry related subject such as biochemistry, chemical technology, applied chemistry or industrial chemistry.We also consider applicants whose degree included a significant element of organic chemistry, such as pharmacology, pharmacy, pharmaceutical sciences, medicine, veterinary science, biology, biomedical sciences, zoology, microbiology, biotechnology or genetics. Applicants with lower or non-standard qualifications and relevant industrial experience will be considered on an individual basis.Applicants whose first language is not English require an IELTS score of at least 6.0, Pearson's PTE Academic Test 54 or equivalent. English Language Requirements IELTS band: 6 IMPORTANT NOTE: Since April 2014 the ETS tests (including TOEFL and TOEIC) are no longer accepted for Tier 4 visa applications to the United Kingdom. The university might still accept these tests to admit you to the university, but if you require a Tier 4 visa to enter the UK and begin your degree programme, these tests will not be sufficient to obtain your Visa. The IELTS test is most widely accepted by universities and is also accepted for Tier 4 visas to the UK- learn more.
