IT Product Design is a two-year, studio-based program, leading to the degree of Master of Science in Information Technology.
Subject areas
IT Product Design focuses on three areas of design: User Centred Design, Interaction Design and Design Research.
User Centered Design (UCD) is an approach that starts with the end user rather than the actual product. User Centred Design invites the user to contribute knowledge and experience in the design process.
The field of Interaction Design appeared together with the development of computer interfaces. Now, as digital technology moves out from screen-based desktop technologies and into our everyday interactions with the world, the possibilities for the introduction of computational power into physical products are endless.
Good designers possess an ability to reflect on their own processes and methods for designing, using this understanding to devise new and more effective ways to design. At IT Product Design, Design Research is a vital part of design practice.
Graduates who have completed this master programme are entitled to use the title of Master of Science (MSc) in Information Technology (Product Design).
Career opportunities
As the fields relate to IT Product Design are constantly expanding, students have the opportunity to, in part, define their own organisational role.
Throughout the programme, there are several opportunities to work with companies, for example in the user centred design projects, the course on professional roles and, of course, in the thesis project.
Depending on the student's background and talents, a graduate of IT Product Design may become User Centred Designer, User Experience Designer, Interaction Designer, (Design) Process Manager, User Interface Designer, Design Coordinator, Design Research, Product Development Designer and more. As you might notice titles might be interchangeable, however this gives an overview of some career options.

Starting your own design company
All graduates will have gained valuable competences such as:

With his programme you are qualified for a job in Denmark or abroad and for studies at PhD level.
In this programme we teach theories, methods, and tools for designing human-centred innovation. This includes design processes, user participation in design, work practice studies, human machine interaction, IT technologies, design team learning, design visualisation and communication.
The course curriculum is divided into four semesters
* 1st: Design Research Horizon
* 2nd: Participatory Practices
* 3rd: Interaction Research
* 4th: Master Thesis - Graduation Project
During your studies, you will work in the design studio and learn through intensive projects and seminars to explore the hot topics in designing; some will be solo, but most projects will be conducted in pairs or larger teams.
During the second semester, we will collaborate with the graduate students of the Innovation & Business engineering programme in Sønderborg to further experience multidisciplinary teamwork.
You will be encouraged to identify your own interests and strengths and to select projects accordingly.
What do we expect from you?
As a student, you must have above average skills in your bachelor degree. Besides wanting to develop new skills, you must be willing to learn from your fellow students as well as to share your knowledge in a multidisciplinary team. As a person, you must have a creative talent and empathy for other people.
As this is an international programme, you need good skills in spoken and written English.

The board of the University of Southern Denmark decides from year to year which study programmes will benefit from the scholarships and the University will recommend the most qualified applicants in these programmes for a scholarship. Therefore it is not possible to apply for this scholarship. If you are a non-EU student and applying for a programme which offers this scholarship you will automatically be considered for it.
BHJ Scholarship
Only available for students applying for a master programme at our Sønderborg Campus
Six one-year scholarships are issued pr. year: three for studies within the technical field i.e. Mechatronics and Innovation & Business respectively, and three are for studies within the field of business administration i.e. Business Relationship Management.
A scholarship of DKK 40.000 may be granted if and when the requirements are met. It is paid in two instalments of DKK 20.000 per semester. The scholarship grant depends on acceptance and enrolment as a full-time student in one of the above mentioned programmes.
