Mounting pressure on health care budgets worldwide has focused attention on how best to organise health care systems and the spending within them. The York programmes in Health Economics for Health Care Professionals have been set up in response to a need in health care sectors for high quality distance learning programmes in Health Economics. The programmes allow students to gain an accredited qualification whilst continuing in their careers, and offer the flexibility to spread study over a period of years to match professional and personal circumstances.

All applicants to this programme should apply for the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Economics for Health Care Professionals in the first instance. Both the Postgraduate Certificate and the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Economics for Health Care Professionals should be completed before progressing to the Postgraduate MSc in Economic Evaluation for Health Technology Assessment.

The modules are organised in a similar manner to the Postgraduate (PG) Certificate and PG Diploma programme in Health Economics, that is, each lasts for approximately 12 weeks and comprises six or seven individual study 'units'. Modules are weighted at 20 'credits', where one credit equals approximately 10 hours of study time.

In addition to the three compulsory modules for the PG Certificate and the three for the PG Diploma in Health Economics, students taking the MSc in Economic Evaluation for Health Technology Assessment take three further modules.

The MSc in Economic Evaluation for Health Technology Assessment (HTA) aims to further students' knowledge and understanding of basic and advanced issues in the economic evaluation of health technology assessment through high quality training in relevant theoretical and practical issues.

The programmes are based around learning 'modules'. Each module has been designed around a workbook written specially by health economists in York and is supplemented by learning support for distance learners. Each module is assessed at the end of the twelve week module study period: for Modules 1 to 4 this involves an unseen written examination taken at an assessment centre. Other modules are assessed by essays and short pieces of project work.

We require a UK honours degree at 2:1 or higher, or qualifications and/or experience deemed by the University to be of an equivalent standard.In addition, applicants whose first language is not English are normally asked to provide evidence of their English language ability before admission to the University. This requirement can be waived if we deem an applicant's level of English to be of an acceptable standard for Postgraduate study (for example if the applicant uses English in his or her day to day job and submits, as part of a referee's report, confirmation to this effect).There is no requirement for experience or qualifications in Economics.We will consider the overall quality of the candidates application. This will include their educational and employment history, the quality of their written statement on reasons for wanting to take the Programmes, and the quality of the references. We reserve the right not to offer a place to an applicant even if they meet our minimum entrance requirements.We also expect the handwriting of all students to be clear and markers of exam questions reserve the right to refuse to mark scripts which are deemed illegible.In recent years, the number of applications received has significantly exceeded the number of places available on the Programme. We have a specific time window for admissions, and offers of a place will be made to the strongest candidates. English Language Requirements IELTS band: 7 IMPORTANT NOTE: Since April 2014 the ETS tests (including TOEFL and TOEIC) are no longer accepted for Tier 4 visa applications to the United Kingdom. The university might still accept these tests to admit you to the university, but if you require a Tier 4 visa to enter the UK and begin your degree programme, these tests will not be sufficient to obtain your Visa. Scholarship awards for students in Education

Scholarship awards available to students applying to study for an MA, or MPhil/PhD degree at the University of York's Department of Education are listed below. You should note that these are highly competitive and only a small minority of applicants will be successful in gaining one of these awards.

* Departmental PhD Studentship Award for October 2014 Entry

The Department of Education at the University of York invites Home/EU students to apply for a Departmental PhD studentship. This comprises a stipend of £13,500 per year, payable for three years, together with a waiver of the tuition fees. In order to be considered for this studentship, you first need to apply to the department for a place on the PhD in Education programme using the Universitys online application form. This will involve including a research proposal of approximately 1,500 words in length outlining your proposed research study.

We have particular research strengths in our four research centres: the Centre for Innovation and Research in Science Education (CIRSE); the Centre for Research on Education and Social Justice (CRESJ); the Centre for Language Learning Research (CLLR); and the Psychology in Education Research Centre (PERC). Applicants must locate their proposed research study in one of these four research centres.

* University Scholarships for International Students

There are three types of scholarships available to students paying fees at the overseas rate. Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis and the selection takes into account academic ability and financial need. * York Masters Opportunity Scholarship 2014

The University of York is offering 60 taught Masters scholarships worth £10,000 each to students liable to pay fees at the home rate entering in 2014.
